Rate Speeches Publishes Annual Original Oratory Winner Analysis Report

LOS ALTOS, California (December 11, 2011) – Rate Speeches released its annual Original Oratory Winner Analysis report. The report provides a detailed analysis of the Original Oratory winners in the NFL (National Forensic League) annual tournament.

Original Oratory (OO) is a popular competitive individual event (IE) within high-school forensics or speech and debate. It is typically a 10-minute persuasive speech delivered at local, state, or national tournaments. The NFL (National Forensic League) national annual tournament is considered the most prestigious national tournament. Every year, tens of thousands of high-school orators compete to qualify for participation in the NFL tournament. Only about two hundred contestant qualify annually. In the tournament, after multiple elimination rounds, only six or seven contestants become finalists (winners).

The report shows the winning Original Oratory high schools since 1963, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010, sorted by number of wins. The report also shows, for each of these winning schools, the number of wins in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. This shows the winning trends of these schools.

This Rate Speeches annual Original Oratory analysis report also provides the winning states since 1963. The report shows the winning Original Oratory states since 1963, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, and 2010, sorted by number of wins. The report further shows, for each of these winning states, the number of wins in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. This shows the winning trends of these states. The states are analyzed by absolute number of finalists (winners) in the states as well as by number of finalists (winners) per million residents within the states.

Cumulatively since 1963, the nation's top school in Original Oratory is Apple Valley High School in Minnesota with 18 finalists. The second is Chesterton High School in Indiana, tied with San Antonio Churchill High School in Texas each with 14 finalists. The third is Marquette University High School in Wisconsin with 11 finalists. The fourth is Holy Ghost Preparatory in Pennsylvania with 10 finalists, and the fifth is Bellarmine College Preparatory in California with 9 finalists.

However, the trend analysis of these schools reveals that Apple Valley High School (MN) emerged as the clear winner in the 1990s with seven finalists, and again as the clear leader in the 2000s with ten winners. The trend for Chesterton High School (IN), on the other hand, is eight, four, and two winners in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s respectively, clearly showing a drop. Similarly, San Antonio Churchill High School (TX) had nine and five winners in the 1980s and 1990s, but none since. Marquette University High School (WI) has not had any finalists since the 1990s.

Cumulatively since 2000, the nation's top school in Original Oratory is Apple Valley High School (MN) with 11 finalists. The second is Holy Ghost Preparatory in Pennsylvania with four finalists, and the third is Sacred Heart High School (MA) with three finalists.

Looking at the states, cumulatively since 1963, the top states are Texas (41), California (38), Indiana (33), Minnesota (23), and Wisconsin (18). However, cumulatively since 2000, the top winners are Minnesota (13), Indiana (8) tied with Texas (8), and Pennsylvania (6) tied with California (6).

Considering the population disparity between the states, the report also provides state ratings based on per capita, or number of finalists per million residents in the state. Using the per capita rating, the top states since 1963 are Indiana (5.5), South Dakota (5.0), Minnesota (4.6), Wisconsin (3.0), and Oklahoma (2.8). Texas and California rate tenth and fourteenth with 1.6 and 1.0 respectively.

Cumulatively since 2000 using per capita ratings, the top winners are Minnesota (2.60), Indiana (1.33), South Dakota (1.25), New Mexico (0.95), and Massachusetts (0.57). Texas and California rate twelfth and seventeenth with 0.32 and 0.16 respectively.
