CheckoutSmart - UK Shoppers react to government announcements by going supermarket shopping

A. People get up early and go to the supermarket!

Kantar said that grocery sales were up 20.6% in March to their highest ever level, peaking 16th - 19th March.

From our analysis of 70,512 of shopper's receipts submitted to us as part of cashback claims, we can see that they were up much earlier than usual that week, probably to "avoid the crowds" or just get there when items are in stock. This happened again the week after, when the restrictions were increased.

The chart compares the average balance of shopping trips in on that day of the week between 2nd January 2020 and March 8th to the last 3 weeks of March during the UK Coronavirus. Overlaying the Government important announcements of the day it is clear that the day following major Uk government plans to clampdown on life, the average UK household rose early the next day and went to the supermarket.

The biggest impact was on 16th and 19th of March just after the Government's first restrictions. This was repeated on March 25th just after the most recent and stringent ones.

Reviewing the chart, Paul Lees Group Managing Direcotr of CheckoutSmart said: "There is no doubt that the UK government's announcements had a significant and immediate impact on supermarket shoppers' behaviour. I doubt that getting up early the next morning and heading out, was quite what they had in mind however."

By end of March things were looking to calm down again as the shopping times at least returned to normal.
