Icelandic Music - Rite of Spring

Icelandic Music - Rite of Spring

Icelandair (icelandair.co.uk) is offering a special Rite of Spring package (riteofspring.is) that includes flights to Iceland, accommodation and tickets from its European and US destinations. Organised by Mr. Destiny (the promoters behind the successful Iceland Airwaves festival), Rite of Spring aims to bring the best and most adventurous musicians in jazz, folk and world music together for a musical celebration in Reykjavík from May 17-19.

The Rite of Spring festival made its critically-acclaimed début last year with world class performances from artists such as Serbia’s KAL and local jazz–funk pioneers Mezzoforte, amongst many others. Amongst the headliners for this year are Sarajevo-born artist Goran Bregovic, known for his eclectic, dance-inducing mix of gypsy brass, traditional Bulgarian polyphonies and rock ‘n’ roll created alongside his Weddings and Funerals Band, a string orchestra and a stunning male choir.

Also headlining is Mali’s Oumou Sangaré, a.k.a. the “Songbird of Wassoulou." As one of the world’s most astounding female voices, Sangaré has toured with the likes of Baaba Maal, Femi Kuti and Boukman Eksperyans, and has released critically-acclaimed albums such as Ko Sira (1993), Worotan (1996) and the double CD compilation Oumou (2004).

Well-known Icelandic jazz bassist / composer Tómas R. Einarsson also features on the 2007 line-up, along with another local star, Samúel J. Samúelsson, who will present his new Big Band. Scottish Salsa fiends Salsa Celtica – who stole the show in 2006 - are also scheduled to reappear.

Icelandic Music Export (IMX) is a government-sponsored body which is collaborating with Rite of Spring to promote the festival abroad. IMX are soon launching an Icelandic music website in May to bring together the different strands of Icelandic music under one roof. The website will feature all Icelandic music events, news and information on bands and artists.
