Original 1953 prospectus for Disneyland in California will be sold Dec. 16-18 by Philip Weiss Auctions

(OCEANSIDE, N.Y.) – A monstrous three-day estate auction, featuring important Disney items (to include the complete and original 1953 Disneyland prospectus, drafted by Walt Disney himself and outlining his ideas for the iconic theme park in California) will be held the weekend of Dec. 16-18 by Philip Weiss Auctions, in the firm’s showroom at #1 Neil Court in Oceanside.

The prospectus is one of only three printed and in all probability is the only one that has survived intact and complete. It comes with maps and the words and images of Walt Disney and artist Herb Ryman. The information contained in the prospectus would be used the following year to break ground on Disneyland, one of the most famous and visited family amusement parks in the world. It remains as a monument to the vision of Walt Disney, along with Disney World.

All of the Disney material will be offered Dec. 17, the sandwich day of the auction. Other Disney lots will include an original production Courvoisier setup of the queen from Snow White, an Alice in Wonderland production cel with pre-production background, limited-edition cels and production cels, Disney books, toys, original Disney paintings, illustrations, statues and more.

Three Disney lots expected to generate much bidder interest are a large, mixed-media painting of “Tic Toc” from the classic movie Peter Pan; a large oil-on-board painting of Black Pete; and a rare, all-original Mickey Mouse radio made by Philco (Buenos Aires, Argentina). The radio is large, at 10 inches by 14 inches by 17.5 inches, and features a dark wood cabinet and a cast metal plate with Mickey Mouse image. It has been rewired and is in working order.

Two original Peanuts comic strips, drawn by the late illustrator Charles Schulz, will also cross the block that day. The first day of the auction (Friday, Dec. 6, beginning at 4 p.m. EST) will feature dolls, doll houses and toy soldiers. The dolls will include wonderful examples by Heubach, Gebruder, SFBJ, Shirley Temple, Madame Alexander and Steiff, plus doll houses.

The toy soldiers will include mint Britains sets, Courtenay & Courtenay Greenhill figures, dime-store soldiers and more. The sale’s final day (Sunday, Dec. 18, with a start time of 10 a.m., same as Saturday), will feature toys and trains, headlined by Part 1 of a major American Flyer collection. Also offered will be great pieces by Lionel, HO Brass, Marklin and many more.

Part of a single-owner pressed steel truck collection will also change hands, featuring impressive contemporary pieces, Smith Miller, Tonka, Nylint, Buddy L and more. A grouping of highly collectible mechanical banks will include a Punch & Judy, Speaking Dog, Eagle and Eaglets, and others. Also to be sold will be general vintage toys (tin litho, wind-ups and more).

Philip Weiss Auctions will ring in the new year with a Friday, Jan. 6 auction featuring stamps, coins and postcards. Sold will be two important collections of Russian stamps, postcards and covers, to include rarities and high-end examples. Then, on Friday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m, Philip Weiss Auctions will conduct a Hollywood memorabilia, pop culture and rock ‘n’ roll auction.

The music and rock ‘n’ roll portion of that auction, beginning at 6 p.m., is expected to generate strong bidder interest. Featured will be Beatles material (to include a rare first North American Capitol single, lobby cards, posters, a Yellow Submarine thermos, concert tickets, a scarce 1962 UK handbill, a collection of 45rpm records and more), and original concert posters.

Also sold in that session will be Rolling Stones autographs (with Brian Jones), a rare 1971 Led Zeppelin at Boston Garden poster, items pertaining to Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead, a fine selection of period psychedelic and concert posters and other material.

The first part of the Jan. 20 sale, beginning at 4 p.m., will have Hollywood memorabilia from the Lester Glassner collection (featuring photos and more), as well as additions from other estates, including a selection of movie posters, a box lot of photos, negatives, original Broadway window cards, playbills, original artwork for 1920s and ‘30s theater magazines and much more.

Also included will be a collection of original movie costumes, to include Laurel & Hardy costumes from The Bullfighters; Jane Russell’s costume from The Outlaw; a suit worn by James Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy; Bette Davis’s gown from The Virgin Queen, Rudolph Valentino’s vest from Son of the Sheik; and a Charlton Heston costume from Planet of the Apes.
