THE STAYTON AT MUSEUM WAY HONORS VOLUNTEER FROM THE MODERN ART MUSEUM OF FORT WORTH
Out of her love of the arts, Shirley Reid has been serving as a docent at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth since they opened their new building in 2002. Because of this selfless act, The Stayton at Museum Way senior living community is recognizing Shirley Reid as the third recipient of the 2011 Stayton Salute to Seniors Award. Leslie Murrell, assistant curator of education for the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, nominated Reid for the honor.“Shirley is an outstanding docent for the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth,” said Murrell. “She exceeds the high standards of the program by designing and leading tours for diverse audiences at the museum in a manner that is both educational and enjoyable. We’re so fortunate to have her as a volunteer!”
The Stayton Salute to Seniors Award is presented quarterly to honor an individual who is making a difference in their community. Qualified nominees are active adults age 62 and above who volunteer their time and talents to their communities, and who also exemplify leadership, spirit, and citizenship.
“Being in the cultural heart of Fort Worth, we are lucky to be surrounded by exceptional museums,” said Kerri Lambert, director of sales and marketing of The Stayton. “We are so happy to honor Mrs. Reid for the service she is providing to our community and to the arts by serving as a docent at the Modern.”
Reid has always had a passion for the arts and has been involved in the arts in Fort Worth for many years. When they were just building the new building for the Modern, Reid decided it was an important project for Fort Worth and wanted to get involved. She’s been working as a docent at the museum since they moved from their previous location that now houses the Community Arts Center and opened their new building in 2002.
“It’s personally fulfilling,” said Reid. “I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t do it. It’s a learning experience for me, and the people that I work with there are really nice and so smart. It’s inspiring.”
Reid, 83, retired from clerical work after 20 years. In addition to volunteering at the Modern, she gives her time and expertise to serving as a docent at the Kimbell Art Museum and she helps out the symphony league as needed. When she’s not serving her community, she enjoys spending time with her four children and five grandchildren.
The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is dedicated to collecting, presenting, and interpreting international developments in post–World War II art in all media and creating a welcoming environment for its public appreciation. The Modern promotes understanding and interest in art and artists through curatorial research and publications, and a variety of educational programs, including lectures, guided tours, classes, and workshops.
