Pivot Bearing Insert allows Die Cast Hinges

The Pivot Bearing Insert (PBI) is a revolutionary new die casting invention that allows movable linkages (e.g. hinges or joints) to be made entirely in a single die casting step.
Before the PBI, it was not possible to create movable hinges by simple die casting.

The aluminum PBI is composed of two prefabricated cup-like parts inserted into one another. The PBI is a sealed, permanently lubricated, and freely turning pivot that is positioned in die casting molds at points of rotation. Products have perfect alignment of all moveable parts, need no lubrication, and therefore require minimal maintenance.

Virtually any molten metal, alloy, or plastic material can be injected into the mold around the PBIs. (For an animated video, please visit www.tequinus.com .) PBIs can be manufactured in any particular size to suit applications from large structural bearings to nanotechnology. The only requirement is that the injected material fuses with the outermost layers of the PBI caps, so that the resulting linkages can rotate freely.

A completely die cast hinge using the PBI received top honors at the recent 2011 North American Die Casting Association’s competition. The winning entry was lauded for increased manufacturing speed, reduced weight, and improved quality, as well as product reliability and significant material and labor cost savings.

The PBI patent is offered for sale or license by the inventor and accomplished German Diplom Engineer, Joachim H. Janz. This marvel of German engineering promises expanded marketing opportunities for all die cast products. It advances both manufacturing and production by combining the ingenuity of casting with an advanced product design.
