Fashion Designer and Humanitarian William Malcolm Seeks to Impact Youth with His Scholarship Contest

We Must Teach Our Young Men To Become Successful Men So That They Can Positively Impact Our Communities

This is why he established the William Malcolm Man of Style & Substance Scholarship Contest. The goal of this annual scholarship competition is to highlight and encourage young men from Michigan (High School Seniors) to pursue excellence in educational endeavors, expose them to volunteerism and community service work. As well as nurture a greater since of responsibility towards their families.

The young men that participate in the scholarship contest will begin to understand that true symbols of manhood are not necessarily found in music videos, athletic fields or popular culture. They will also learn that a true man, a man of style and substance is defined by how he responds to the successes and adversities that life can bring. The young men will be willing to learn that successful men are defined by how they honor their responsibilities, respect women, care for their families and contribute to the communities in which they live. Through participation in the scholarship competition the young men will realize the importance of seeking direction, guidance and mentoring from successful men. So that they can, when ready take what they have learned and become a mentor themselves.

The numbers speak for themselves:
About 80% of African American children can expect to spend "a significant" portion of their childhood living without their biological father.

About 30% of Caucasian children will spend a significant portion of their childhood being raised without a father
As of 2008 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers and raised without the guidance of a father or male role model

Although the aforementioned statistics represent the complete totality of fatherlessness for both male and female children in America; there is a definite correlation to increased negative attributes in regards to the development of young men. The separation of both fathers and male role models for young men are causing many of them to grow up without any direction as to what constitutes a respected man in our society. Many are left to develop their concept of manhood from popular culture icons or their peers.

William believes that a man’s success in life is directly related to his ability to transcend life’s obstacles and challenges. As well as how he uses his skills and talents to maximize the opportunities that they create for him. William’s goal with his annual scholarship contest is to influence the young men that enter the competition by exposing them to successful men, situations and opportunities that will either reinforce or introduce them to positive male characteristics and figures.

The young men that are selected to be in the program(Michigan High School Seniors) will have various meeting to attend and tasks to complete that will focus on the eight categories that are listed below. Their efforts will be judged throughout the contest based upon the observation of the Man of Style and Substance Scholarship committee members.

The Man of Style & Substance Scholarship Contest began in September of 2009. The annual contest begins with a call for entries that have yielded over 500 culturally diverse entrants from across the state of Michigan within the last two years. The entries are then narrowed down to 20 semi-finalists based on their responses to several questions ranging from educational goals, community service involvement, favorite Michigan based sports team and their idea of what constitutes chivalry towards women. The Scholarship program has successfully highlighted and raised awareness for over 60 local nonprofit organizations that were prominently featured throughout the competition and showcased at the Man Of Style And Substance Selection Gala’s that were held at the Historic Whitney Mansion (2009) and the Charles H. Wright Museum located in the Cultural District of Detroit (2010).
