Projected Growth of Diabetes Patient Population Driving the Appearance of Numerous Pipeline Glucose Monitors

10-05-2011 01:28 PM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: Greystone Research Associates

(Amherst, NH) – The expected surge in the incidence of diabetes is creating a health care conundrum for public health officials and a potential business opportunity for market sector participants. The issue of glycemic control and its correlation with patient morbidity and mortality has fueled awareness of the need for improved patient compliance with glucose monitoring. The convergence of these forces is creating the perception of a once-in-a-decade opportunity for companies capable of effectively addressing the coming market need for diabetes management products.

Advances in sensing electronics and signal processing are paving the way for glucose monitors that have the potential to eliminate the need for invasive blood sampling. Noninvasive monitors winding their way through the development and clinical trial process include novel optical, RF, and spectroscopy systems. Healthcare providers agree that the ability to monitor glucose levels in a painless and consistent way has the potential to improve the quality of life for millions of diabetes patients. But the challenge of consistently and reliably measuring glucose levels noninvasively is a daunting technical challenge that must take into account the physiological variations and user needs of patients across a broad genetic and socioeconomic spectrum. These monitors must be extremely accurate and reliable, and usable by almost anyone.

The current generation of continuous glucose monitors integrates several patient-friendly features that have evolved over time, including minimally invasive sensor insertion, higher reliability and accuracy, and wireless data displays. Sector participants are targeting a segment that will continue to expand due to the aging of the population in most developed countries, new criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes that emphasizes lower glucose thresholds, and expansion of technologies into emerging market populations. While the initial emphasis has been on the more lucrative ambulatory diabetic market, a number of companies are making significant strides in the development of continuous monitors targeting in-patient glycemic control, where the cost and effort for periodic and continual caregiver-performed glucose meter testing presents a strong selling point.

Two new research studies, Noninvasive Glucose Monitors: Strategies, Products, Players and Prospects, and Continuous Glucose Monitors: Evolving Technology, Emerging Opportunities , analyze glucose sensing and monitoring products and technologies, examine glucose monitor design issues and evolving market factors, evaluate continuous glucose monitors currently in development, and forecasts the impact of glucose sensing technology and devices on diabetes management markets.

Antibacterial Treatments that don’t Rely on Antibiotics Winding their way thro …
(Amherst, NH) – As bacteria grow resistant to conventional antibiotics, alternatives are being investigated, including antibodies, probiotics, bacteriophages, and antimicrobial peptides. The quest to replace the current generation of antibiotics is complicated by the methods that bacteria have acquired to evade attempts to destroy them – methods often referred to a virulence factors. A microorganism can possess a wide array of virulence factors. They may only express these virulence factors when
