Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek wins Entrepreneur of the Year at CITY AM Awards
London, 22 September 2011: Daniel Ek, co-founder of Spotify, the music streaming company, won Entrepreneur of the Year award at the second CITY AM Awards last night.The decision to award Ek comes from the company’s successful licensing negotiations with Universal Music. Ek co-founded Spotify with Martin Lorentzon in 2008 and the business has been valued at $1bn.The company is also set for a US expansion next year with continued talks with Warner Music and rumoured increased development with Facebook.
Daniel Ek beat nominees Iain Dodsworth, founder of Tweetdeck, the third-party social media manager app, Simon Calver, CEO of LoveFilm, ASOS co-founder Nick Robertson and Mind Candy founder Michael Acton Smith to win the gong.
Amongst the judges were Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP, Sir Roger Carr, chairman of Centrica and CBI President as well as City AM’s editor Allister Heath and deputy editor David Hellier.
Other award winners include ARM Holdings for Business of the Year. The microchip company supplies chips for 95 per cent of the world’s mobile phones including the iPhone and iPad and employ over 1,700 people world-wide. JP Morgan Cazenove walked away with Investment Bank of the Year for a second year running.
The awards, hosted by daily business newspaper CITY AM, were held at Grange St Paul’s Hotel, London and were launched last year to recognise those who have helped position London at the centre of the world’s financial markets and global business.
The awards were sponsored by Saxo Bank, the global investment bank specialising in online trading and investment.
