Press release from: Alzheimer's Association Long Island

/ PR Agency: PRMG
SOUTHAMPTON, NY (September 20, 2011) — Alzheimer’s Association Long Island is inviting Eastern Long Island residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the first annual Alzheimer’s Association Long Island’s East End Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Its satellite office at 33 Flying Point Road, Suites 121/122 in Southampton will be the site of the Chapter’s kick-off event on Saturday, October 1 at 7:30 a.m.

The Walk will be preceded by a grand opening of the Southampton office. The new office will allow care consultants to schedule family meetings to provide information for families or individuals on the East End of Long Island who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s Association Long Island staff members and invited local elected officials will be joined by Cory Leible, a 70-year-old resident of Southampton who will be walking to raise funds in support of the fight against Alzheimer’s disease for the past seven years.

At 8:00 a.m., Mr. Leible will start his walk from the Southampton office and head toward Gurney’s Inn at 290 Old Montauk Highway. At 3:00 p.m., the walkers will meet up with Mr. Leible at the East Hampton Nature Preserve and join him for the last five kilometers (3.1 miles) of the Walk.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for the participants in Eastern Long Island who will learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Each walker will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. In addition to the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) walk, participants who raise $100 or more will enjoy a celebratory barbeque at Gurney’s Inn and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s.

“There has never been a greater need for the citizens of the East End of Long Island to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” said Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, an Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer. “Funds raised will provide care and support services to the 60,000 residents of Long Island living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research.”
