"Best Young Entrepreneurs" Expand Clothing Business to Food Truck

08-26-2011 09:32 AM CET | Arts & Culture

Press release from: PYKNIC

The food-themed clothing range, Pyknic ( pyknic.com ), has announced plans of expansion into mobile retail through the use of an actual food truck. Pyknic will be utilizing the largest funding platform for creative projects in the world, Kickstarter ( http://kck.st/qTsRDX ), to raise capital for the venture.

DeSales University '09 graduates, Stephen Thompson, 24, of Robbinsville, NJ and Andrew Marshall, 25, of Vestal, NY, started Pyknic while juggling college educations and commitments to the University's men's soccer team in 2006.

The Business Majors sold 200 pre-ordered t-shirts to classmates before eventually expanding their line to include denim jeans, sweatshirts, collectable vinyl toys, and hats sold in stores nationally in retailer Pacific Sunwear as well as boutiques in London, Milan, Paris, and Tokyo. In 2010 they were named to Bloomberg Businessweek's Best Young Entrepreneurs list.

"Rather than occupy one set space in a set city, we'll be able to continuously go to where the foot-traffic is. I think the food truck is a fun and unique way to get our brand to market all over the Eastern Seaboard that is true to the Pyknic lifestyle," says Stephen Thompson.

As of August 24, 2011 the food truck was 20% funded with $2,060 of the pair's $10,000 goal which must be met by September 14, 2011. Pledges of any amount over $5 can be made at Pyknic's Kickstarter page ( http://kck.st/qTsRDX ). The business is offering rewards in return for pledges with such notables as a pizza party, lunch, limited edition truck t-shirts, aprons, and reusable shopping bags.

Now located in New Jersey, Marshall and Thompson, who go by the pseudo-names "The Chef" and "The Butcher", have created the lifestyle brand as an outlet for their culture of food, sport, friends, and music. Pyknic's premium t-shirts are illustrated with food concepts in mind, retailing for about $24.50 on their website (http://www.pyknic.com).
