Press release from: Riderwood

SILVER SPRING, MD (August 2, 1011) -- The Riderwood Lions Club has kicked-off Stamps for the Wounded, a month-long August project to collect postage stamps from the retirement campus’ nearly 3,000 residents. The stamps will provide hospitalized veterans in more than 130 Veterans Administration facilities across the nation with the supplies needed to engage them in stamp collecting related therapy. The veterans being helped were injured in wars ranging from WWII through Afghanistan, as well as the many other troubled spots in the world.

The Riderwood project got off to a fast start with more than 8 pounds of stamps donated by resident Robert Helm, who said, “There is more to come.” Lion Louise Macauley, President of the Riderwood Lions Club, and Lion Esko Hallila, Stamps for the Wounded Project Chairman, gratefully accepted the collection of stamps on behalf of the Riderwood Lions Club.

Riderwood residents place their donated stamps into Lions Club collection containers, located in various facilities throughout the 120-acre Silver Spring campus. The project, which will help provide a continuous source of stamps for Veteran therapy, is promoted by the Riderwood Lions via flyers on residential bulletin boards and special program announcements aired on the Riderwood Community’s closed-circuit television.

Stamps for the Wounded, a service activity of Lions Clubs International, was founded in 1942 in response to an appeal from Armed Forces Hospitals. The American Red Cross, Dept of Veterans Affairs, and other Veteran groups recognize the therapeutic value of Stamps for the Wounded in helping provide a consuming interest for hospitalized Veterans who are bedridden, and experiencing long term treatment.

Members of the Riderwood Lions Club, a branch of the College Park Lions Club, are affiliated with The International Association of Lions Clubs, the largest service organization in the world. Lions Club members create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people by providing an array of voluntary community and international services.

Among its numerous charitable fundraising projects, the Riderwood Lions Club sponsors an annual community clothing drive for the Vietnam Veterans and for toiletries and special items for the homeless, and maintains collection containers for Used Eye Glasses and Used Hearing Aids Recycling and for Soda Can Tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities.
