JMA Pilani LLC Legal Literacy Club Conducts Orientation Session

The main aim of opening the club is to create awareness among students about their constitutional rights, duties and legal obligations with the firm conviction that as youth in India today and as responsible citizens in India tomorrow, they will be destined to play more effective and helpful role in the larger task of nation building in later years. The club will function under the aegis of District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) and Rajasthan State Legal Services Authorities (SLSA). The apex body for these authorities is National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) with Chief Justice of the Supreme Court as its chairman.

The structure of each club is based on 10-25 students, a teacher incharge, panel lawyer and a para legal volunteer. The students of the club will be educated by organisation legal literacy classes in schools on some particular days. The resource persons, representatives, retired and serving judicial officers, panel lawyers of SLSA will take those classes as per NALSA curriculum. The students will be informed on general issues like female foeticide, child marriage and dowry prohibition, protection of children against sexual offences act, juvenile justice act, prevention of damage to the public property act, rights of disabled persons, right to education and information, ragging, road safety, common laws against domestic violence, protection of women rights etc.

On 21 Oct 2019, Legal Literacy Club LLC of JMA Pilani organized the first orientation program for the students. Teacher incharge Sri Mahendra Kumar conducted the session covering telephone numbers that can be used for reporting various purposes, Child Rights and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences POCSO Act 2012. Helpline numbers such as All-in-One Emergency 112, Police 100, Ambulance 104, Medical Emergency 108, Child Line 1098, Fire Station 101, Women Garima 181, Missing Children & Women 1094, Free Legal Aid 15100, Anti Ragging 1800-180-5522, National Health 1800-180-1104, Senior Citizen 1291 & 1800-180-1253, Railway Enquiry 138 / 139, Railways Security 182 / 1322, Accident Relief 1072 / 1073, Traffic Police 1095, POCSO Child Protection 9868235077, Disaster 1070, Central Vigilance Commission 1964, Election Commission 1950 were explained to the club students.

The Child Rights familiarization included life survival and development; right to privacy; protection from violence, abuse and neglect; safe environment; protection from work that harms; right to play and relax; protection from sexual abuse and sexual exploitation; know their rights; to be heard; to talk about anything; to information; to trust their feelings; to tell secrets that worry; to be taken seriously; to say no to touching that worries; to express anger; to feel good about themselves; to the ownership of their bodies; to feel safe; etc.

In the context of POCSO the details included various symptoms of sexual abuse in children, adoptive supportive behavior towards child victims as well as unsupportive behavior towards child victims. Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan congratulated the students and teacher incharge Sri Mahendra Kumar and emphasized that while remembering fundamental rights one should not forget the fundamental duties.
