Halloween bewitches visitors to Costa Rica with annual craft giveaway
Spells and hexes; wands and brooms. Let these witches wear mushrooms.
San Jose, October 19, 2019 – As the popularity for Halloween skyrockets in the Central American country, helped along by expats and social media, Alfonso “Pocho” Vega is excited to bring his delightful creations to be a part of the October celebrations. For over 40 years and well known for his efforts in continuing the traditions of mascarada making -- which combines masks from Pre-columbian times with Spanish reenactments in his native town of La Union de Cartago -- Pocho comes up with innovative twists on the typical designs. With divided time between working alongside the Costa Rican Tourism Board (Instituto Costarricense de Turismo, or ICT) and yearly preparations for national fairs, he is eager to share his skills with new generations within his family and by teaching children’s workshops.
”I am very passionate about what I do. I start working at 6 a.m. and don’t finish till late every day. I’m anxious to finish each mascara,” said Pocho.
The cute toadstool hatted witches Pocho has made at his workshop, with the help of his daughter and granddaughter, are the ideal souvenir for visitors to the country to take home and share. After the success of their devil puppet giveaway last year, Vamos has upped the number of its gifts to provide even more Halloween treats.
Customers picking up or dropping off vehicles on October 31 will be eligible for one of the 50 specially commissioned witches -- boxed puppets lovingly made to take Costa Rican craft worldwide.
