On July 20th 2001 the Republicans and the Tea Party did something that has never been done before, they held the world’s first debate using Twitter as the forum.

Only six candidates participated, the only top tier candidate being Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachnamann who is trending ahead in Iowa poll, second only to current front runner Mitt Romney.

Rounding out the debate were Herman Cain, the former Godfather Pizza CEO, Rick Santorum, the former Senator from Pennsylvania, Newt Gingrich, who needs no introduction, newcomer Rep. Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan, and Gary Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico.

Johnson, who was excluded from CNN’s most recent televised debate, hasn’t been getting a lot of traction. Some pollsters aren’t including his name is surveys, and he’s strapped for cash, making matters much worse.

However, on Twitter the playing field was even, and in the most recent Wepolls.com poll Gary Johnson won the day. Out of 342 respondents, an overwhelming 57 percent declared the former New Mexico governor the victor.

In second place was Michele Bachmann with just five percent of the vote. Herman Cain’s train fell to third with percent. Fifteen percent wrote in Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who’s running for president but didn’t participate in the debate, and nine percent didn’t follow the debate at all.

“This is an interesting phenomenon,” says Wepolls.com Chairman Alex Karendreas. “Mr. Johnson deserves a ‘congratulations’ for his win, however, the results are more indicative that Mr. Johnson is a second choice for many candidates who were not in the debate, such as Mitt Romney or Ron Paul, who consistently poll well.”

It is possible that Gary Johnson will pick up support from this debate victory, raise more money, and find himself improving in other polls that include Romney, Paul, Huntsman, and the others.
