Thai introduce direct flights from Copenhagen, Denmark to Phuket, Thailand

Phuket, Thailand: Thai Airways International, the national flag carrier and largest airline in Thailand, has announced plans to introduce direct flights from Copenhagen in Denmark to Phuket, Thailand. The new service is due to start on 11th November 2011.

The new route will be Thai Airways’ first direct flight from a European city direct to the holiday Island of Phuket. The airline plans to run three scheduled flights per week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

“The Boeing 747-400 flights will make it easier than ever to travel from Scandinavia straight to Phuket,” opined Thai Airways International Executive Vice President Pandit Chanapai.

However, the airline has revealed that return flights will not fly direct from Phuket to Denmark. Passengers returning to Copenhagen will have to fly via Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.

Thai Airways also plans to introduce new direct flights to Thailand from cities across Europe. Flights from Brussels to Bangkok will begin operating on November 17th this year and will run three times a week.

To facilitate this expansion Thai recently bought fifteen new aircraft; six Boeing 777’s; four Airbus A350’s; and five Airbus A320’s. These new additions to the fleet came in at a total cost of 49.5 billion baht (US$1.7 billion).

The airline also signed a twelve year operating lease for twenty two other planes at a cost of 69.1 billion baht (US$2.3 billion). Thai will take delivery of the aircraft between 2011 and 2017.

A further acquisition of thirty eight new aircraft is also being considered by the board of directors.

The company is hoping that the new aircraft will help to maintain and raise standards by providing a more modern and efficient fleet.

Thai Airways International was placed fifth worldwide in the 2011 World's Best Airlines category at the 2011 Skytrax World Airline Awards; up from ninth in 2010. The airline also came first in the categories; Best Airline Economy Class Onboard Catering; and Best Airline Economy Class seat.

Over 18.8 million airline passengers from one hundred different countries cast their votes for a total of two hundred airlines.
