Dreweatts 1759 Fine Art Auction, 31 July 2019 - Lot 110, Oil on Canvas, French School (19th century) Entitled Odalisque

UK – Leading regional auction house Dreweatts 1759 launched their new live bidding platform last week, empowered by Bidpath’s online bidding technology. Their first live auction with the company took place on Wednesday at their flagship saleroom in Newbury, Berkshire and included an eclectic range of 236 Fine Art works across the spectrum of art history, from the 16th to 21st centuries.

The proof of the pudding was in the eating when lot 110, an oil on canvas from the French School (19th century) entitled Odalisque, sold for £10,000 (inclusive of buyer’s premium). It was the second highest grossing lot in the sale, a testament to the power of a private label solution and its ability to attract buyers who are fully engaged in the auction process, and the auction house brand.

Dreweatts took the commercial decision to offer the service to all bidders free of charge, where buyers are typically used to paying up to 5% on top of the hammer price of a lot to bid online through third party service providers. Overall, more lots were sold by hammer value through Dreweatts live bidding platform than alternative service providers. Dreweatts are expecting to increase the sell through rate by volume and value in the coming months, and as they start to promote the service more widely to new and existing buyers.

Jonathan Pratt, Managing Director of Dreweatts 1759 commented after the sale: “Dreweatts have historically been ahead of the curve in adopting new technologies in the Fine Art industry. As we embarked on the next stage of our strategic development it was important for us to embed an integrated and reliable IT solution to support our growth, enabling us to deliver the best possible service to both our vendors and our buyers. The Bidpath team worked alongside development teams at Webreality and Navision to deliver the perfect solution. We held our first live auction last week and we were delighted with the results.”

David Brindley, President of Bidpath commented: “2019 has seen a lot of movement in the Fine Art sector of the UK auction industry, with clients looking for an alternative way for buyers to bid online in their auctions. Bidpath technology empowers auctioneers with a feature rich and customisable private label bidding platform, and the support of a first-rate team with specialist auction experience. It can be fully integrated with the client’s website CMS, and any other software they use, to deliver a best in class end-to-end solution. We we’re extremely proud to launch the Bidpath platform with Dreweatts, which was a true team effort, and we are looking forward to seeing how it can support Dreweatts ongoing in achieving their year on year growth.”
