Design and appraisal of elevator and escalator systems – a new field of expertise for SCHNABEL AG
Engineering office acts on the increasing importance of lift systems that fit both the building and the budgetFrankfurt on the Main – Since April 1st 2011, SCHNABEL AG has been actively involved in the field of elevator and escalator systems by offering related design and consultancy services.
During the past years, the legal requirements governing the installation and operation of lift systems have become increasingly stringent. There has been a flood of new or revised standards and regulations. One example is the requirement that lift systems conform to BetrSichV (Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health), another is the energy efficiency standard EnEV (Energy conservation regulations). It is hardly surprising that these changes caused great confusion among operators and their management firms. SCHNABEL AG approaches this problem by offering competent, vendor independent consulting services, by offering planning services that are tailored to fit both the building and the budget and by designing customized solutions for her clients, which conform to all standards.
In the past, the requirements of architects and clients on elevator and escalator systems in terms of space, design and budget have led to widely varying results. In some cases it was the right technology for the building, but the costs went through the roof. In other projects the costs would be within budget but the technology did not entirely meet the requirements. When lifts and escalators are modernized clients are often led to believe there are problems with their “outdated” systems. But not every noisy motor or relay logic elevator control system needs to be completely replaced. Reconditioning or partial replacement are considerably less expensive and perfectly satisfactory solutions. When planning new facilities, it is particularly important to analyse all technical possibilities. Instead of using a machine room-less traction elevator, a hydraulic elevator might well be a more convenient solution, when planning a lift with 4 stops, for example. Hydraulic elevators are not only more economic both in terms of acquisition and maintenance, the available components are also of comparable quality.
Furthermore, SCHNABEL AG assists its clients in analysing the energy consumption of lift technology. Their work is based on the VDI 4707 standard. The EnEV directive lays down the energy-related requirements for buildings. Although their power consumption is considerable, elevator systems are not covered by this legislation. Here, the VDI (Association of German Engineers) has established the VDI 4707. It serves as an energy performance certificate and is also an important tool for assessing a building’s overall energy consumption. The engineers of SCHNABEL AG are thus able to react to the operators’ requirements regarding the environmental compatibility and energy efficiency of their elevator systems and evaluate the technology.
For almost 40 years now, SCHNABEL AG has provided comprehensive consulting and planning services for the construction of secure and available infrastructures for IT and telecom technology. Our projects cover a wide spectrum which includes weak-point and risk analysis, security and availability concepts, building services engineering, and architect/engineer (A/E) services for data centres, switch centres and server rooms. SCHNABEL AG’s team of specialists includes internationally experienced and highly motivated engineers, technicians and sales engineers whose professional qualities are highly regarded in the field. Our client base consists of renowned banks, insurance companies and their subsidiaries, voice, data and internet providers as well as medium-sized and major industrial companies. SCHNABEL AG actively cooperates with national and international firms from the data centre sector to identify new trends and find solutions for current problems. Today’s issues include the visualization of thermal loads, prevention of hotspots, network analysis, Green IT and energy efficiency.
