Treatment Options for Addicted Youth

06-25-2019 03:15 PM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: Pacific Bay Recovery

Adolescence is a time of self-discovery and experimentation and unfortunately for most teens, this means experimenting with alcohol and drugs. While some teens don’t end up addicted after their first few encounters, plenty of others do… leading to a lifelong struggle.

Common Substance Addictions in Teens

• Marijuana or weed is extremely popular among teens. Most teens don’t consider marijuana as addictive or harmful.

• Alcohol is the most readily available and widely consumed substance by teens.

• Opioids and prescription drugs are easily available to teens, usually in their home’s medicine cabinets.

• Study aid drugs, such as Ritalin and Adderall, are misused by students in an attempt to boost their grades.

• Teens usually experiment with hallucinogens, such as LSD, Salvia and magic mushrooms, for fun but before long, they’re hooked.

The signs of substance abuse and addiction vary from one individual to other and will depend upon the substances used. It’s important for parents to know the signs to watch out for in their teens. Early detection of drug use can improve treatment outcomes.

Once the body is rid of the addictive substance in the medical detox, there are two main types of rehab programs – outpatient and inpatient.

Outpatient rehab

Outpatient rehab allows teens to have access to daily, part-time support, so they can continue school uninterrupted. They visit the rehab for counseling and therapy sessions and then they’re free to return home. Outpatient rehab is ideal for teens, who don’t require constant supervision.

Inpatient rehab

Inpatient rehab is highly successful in helping teens fight addiction, especially when the extent and severity of the addiction is significant. Inpatient rehabs offer residential treatment centers for teens where they have access to full support to help overcome addiction. Inpatient rehabs are highly effective because the influence of the environment that led to the addiction can be completely eliminated.

The rehab treatment process usually includes –

Detox

Detoxification is process of flushing out the drugs or alcohol and weaning the body off the abused substance, so your teen can start healing. This should always be carried out in a medical detox where professionals can manage any unpleasant or hazardous withdrawal symptoms.

Therapy

Teens in rehab participate in different therapies, such as –

• Cognitive behavioral therapy
• Family Therapy
• Group Therapy
• Recreational Therapy

It can be frightening to discover that your teen has a substance abuse problem but getting them the right treatment goes a long way in beating the addiction as well as get their lives back on track.
