I AM EQUAL PHOTO DOCUMENTARY

Fashion photographer Matt Spencer brings the 'I AM EQUAL' project to New Mexico.

8 June, 2011 - Santa Fe, NM - As the record breaking 'I AM EQUAL' Photo Documentary makes its way around the globe, project creators Jason Beckett and Matt Spencer announced today that they will bring the historic campaign through Santa Fe, New Mexico on June 22nd, 2011 and stop at the Santa Fe Place Mall to capture photos for the world's largest mosaic.

"We're excited to include Santa Fe in this massive global project and showcase the incredible community spirit of the Southwest," explains Beckett. "It's important that this documentary project be reflective of the compassionate outreach that is taking place in cities big and small around the world. Even though it is not the largest city in the world, Santa Fe has a story to tell the world and the people here have a voice that deserves to be heard."

The 'I AM EQUAL' Photo Documentary will spend the next seven years traveling to 175 cities around the world to collect images for the record-breaking photo mosaic and essay. This massive art project will span over 8,000sq/ft and consist of more than 100,000 individually hand laid 2in photo tiles and become the world's largest photo project in history.

"This project is unique in how it reaches out to people of all walks of life and allows them to speak out about the issues and causes that effect their life and community," explains project photographer and co-creator, Matt Spencer. "Some people come to support women's rights and ending domestic violence, while others are talking about immigration reform and fair wages for migrant workers. We hear stories of cancer survivors and overcoming adversity right alongside those who are fighting for marriage equality and civil liberties. Vegans come out for sustainable farming and organics at the same time as atheists join with Christians to defend the freedom of self expression. There are countless reasons to stand up and declare 'I AM EQUAL' and this project is meant to capture them all."

When the project comes to the Santa Fe Place Mall on June 22nd, the public is welcome to be part of the documentary by having their photo taken between 11:00am and 9:00pm. Those who wish to participate should wear a solid, brightly-colored shirt and be camera ready (hair and makeup done), and minors will need a parent or guardian present to sign the registration form. The entire process takes less than five minutes and the photo will be emailed to each participant so they can share it with friends and family.

"More than breaking a world record, this project is meant to give people a reason to stand up and talk about the issues and causes they support," explains Beckett. "When people see your photo they will be curious about it, so use the opportunity to educate and inspire them to learn more about the issues and get active in the community to make a difference. This project is driven by individuals who have the courage to get up and follow those famous words of Mahatma Gandhi when he said, 'we must be the change we wish to see in the world.'"

ABOUT THE 'I AM EQUAL' PROJECT

The 'I AM EQUAL' Photo Documentary was created by Jason Beckett and fashion photographer Matt Spencer in an effort to empower individuals to speak out about the causes that inspire them. The project goal is to capture more than 100,000 photos of people from all walks of life with the “I AM EQUAL” logo emblazoned on the palm of their hand as a symbol of their commitment to stand up for their rights, and the rights of others around the world. Ultimately, all the photos will be gathered together to create the world's largest photo mosaic composed of 2in. photo tiles and covering more than 8,000 sq/ft.
