As per the World Bank, more than 90% of the world’s plastic waste does not get recycled and ends up as trash and litter. This results in most of the world’s plastic trash releasing toxins that contaminate the soil and groundwater and emitting dangerous greenhouse gases.

For the past 25 years, China has been importing 45% of the global plastic waste, but as of January 2018, China had put a ban on imports of plastic waste. This has created substantial pressures on countries that were tactfully exporting their plastic waste to China. In 2011, plastic waste was America’s primary export to China.

Factors such as rapid urbanization, global population hitting an all-time high, and extensive industrialization to meet the per-capita requirement of the population base, are collectively placing an enormous burden of environmental consequences of plastic waste on the Earth.
The circular economy for plastics propose the most practical solution to combat the pollution generated by plastics across the world. It proposes to keep the resources, that is plastics, in the economy by recycling them so that maximum value can be extracted out of them. A robust circular economy must ensure that more and more plastic is recovered, and plastic waste doesn’t end up in landfill or in the environment.

Circular economy is the next big thing as it helps in mitigating the plastic waste crisis, thereby, improving sustainability, and reducing the overdependence on fossil fuels. It also presents new business opportunities for various organizations. Although various ambitious initiatives have been undertaken to tackle the current plastic waste complications across regions, the search for the most viable solution amidst these is still on.

Several initiatives, such as strict directives by federal governments, are already underway for managing plastic pollution.
