Ivanhoe Mines’ MD for DRC Operations Louis Watum is heading up an expert panel in a live webinar by Mining Review Africa on Wednesday that is focused on investment in the DRC, particularly since the introduction of the revised Mining Code.

The webinar is broadcast live on Wednesday 12 June 2019 at 12h30 GMT, 14h30 Johannesburg, 13h30 London, 14h30 Paris, 18h00 New Delhi and 08h30 New York. Register online to participate.

“The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s new mining legislation seeks to benefit all stakeholders in terms of social, environmental and economic upliftment” says Chantelle Kotze, producer of the webinar and the senior deputy editor of the leading trade journal and digital platform Mining Review Africa.

She adds: “however, it has also increased taxes and placed a high royalty rate on speciality minerals including cobalt and coltan as determined by government. Now, just over a year later, we are looking at the consequences of the new laws so far, whether they been beneficial or not. To answer the business community’s questions about the operating environment within the DRC we have brought together an expert panel from a mining, business and legal point of view.”

Louis Watum joined Ivanhoe Mines in December 2014 as Managing Director of the company’s operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In March 2015, he was appointed to the additional role of General Manager, Kamoa Copper SA. Mr. Watum has lead responsibilities for Ivanhoe Mines’ mine development activities now underway at the Kamoa copper discovery and the Kipushi zinc-copper-silver mine, both in the DRC.

Edmond CIBAMBA DIATA is lawyer at the Bar of the Court of Appeal of Kinshasa/Matete since 2001, after having worked as an advocate at the judicial court of Kinshasa since 1994, Edmond CIBAMBA Maria DIATA is a registered mines and quarries agent approved by the Ministry of Mines since 2003. He also works as the head of department at the Free University of Kinshasa, in charge of tax law and mining law courses.
