VITRONIC at ITS Lyon 2011: Automated Toll Collection Systems Ensure Exact Vehicle Classification and Smooth Traffic Flow

VITRONIC at ITS Lyon 2011: Automated Toll Collection Systems

Wiesbaden / Lyon. Laser-based 3D technology allows a precise classification of vehicles as the basis for correct calculation of toll charges. At ITS 2011 in Lyon, VITRONIC will present innovative toll collection systems such as TollCheckerfreeflow that contribute to preventing traffic jams and improving traffic flow.

VITRONIC TollCheckerfreeflow systems allow a precise 3D vehicle classification in several lanes of flowing traffic. In contrast to other systems, TollCheckerfreeflow only requires a single gantry and no in-road installations such as induction loops and sensors. This lowers installation costs and prevents unnecessary traffic jams during maintenance. No matter whether vehicles drive very fast, tailgate, change lanes or drive closely adjacent to one another: the vehicles are always reliably identified and the toll charge is correctly calculated.

The advantages of TollCheckerfreeflow in practical applications became apparent during a project for Australian Queensland Motorways Ltd. In this case, the conventional toll collection systems were replaced with TollCheckerfreeflow systems with laser-based vehicle identification and fully automated license plate recognition. In 2010, the project was awarded the Toll Excellence Award 2010 of the renowned IBTTA.

The success of this project, such as a classification rate of more than 98 percent and a recognition rate for license plates of all Australian states of more than 97 percent, will be presented in detail by VITRONIC sales director Daniel Scholz during a presentation at ITS Lyon on June 7 (Session TS 07).

PoliScan: efficient speed measurements and red light monitoring

Other things to see at ITS in Lyon: VITRONIC’s PoliScanspeed for speed enforcement using a scanning laser. They simultaneously capture several vehicles in different lanes - with rates of usable images that are up to three times higher than those of other systems. PoliScanspeed requires no roadside installations and - in contrast to radar devices and laser guns - also operates reliably on construction sites and in bends.

PoliScanredlight is the solution for efficient red light monitoring. A scanning laser captures all vehicles in the tracking zone and creates an exact image of the traffic situation. If a violation occurs, two photos are produced: one when the vehicle crosses the stop line and one in the region of the intersection.

The reliable tracking system furthermore ensures a clear documentation and classification of violations in all PoliScan systems. All required data is incorporated into a case file in a manipulation-proof fashion and ensures a continuous chain of evidence. It is also possible to combine speed and red light enforcement.
