Cyprus company launches quest for clean, renewable energy in heart of forest region.
KTV Green Enterprises Ltd, a Cyprus-registered company, has begun operations that has planned annual capacity of 8,000 Mw of clean and renewable electricity, with its only waste products being water vapour and biochar, a valuable soil additive.Using the latest efficient technology, KTV is projecting a positive impact on local communities and a boost to the regional and national economies, all alongside the production of “green” electricity that will be fed into the national grid.
Speaking at a local community meeting in Kato Pyrgos recently, KTV’s sales director Dinos Katchis described their processes and the numerous benefits they will provide. Quite apart from the energy production, a valuable by-product will be the biochar which can be used by farmers and growers to enhance soil quality and improve moisture retention. Both of these benefits have a real value in Cyprus’ typically arid, Mediterranean climate, while research has shown that biochar can also reduce the need for chemical pesticides and herbicides.
Supplies of raw materials for use at both locations will come from otherwise waste timber and other plant matter – biochar production is already under way with commercial quantities being produced at the Kato Pyrgos facility. In common with the electrical generation system, the kilns used are free of harmful emissions with its only by-product being water vapour.
At a recent public meeting, KTV met with members of the local community explaining how expansion of the business, forecast for later in the year, will require additional staff recruitment and lead to additional products including premium timbers, veneers and essential oils.
Support for the KTV initiative has been forthcoming from the Cyprus Green Party who attended the recent public meeting whilst the Kato Pyrgos Community Council has also signalled its support.
KTV managing director, David Garnett said: “We were delighted to meet many of the local residents and share our vision for the efficient and clean use of otherwise waste material. Our mission has broad benefits that we are committed to sharing with our local communities.”
