Labor Department reports 3.1 million job openings in America,

Pasadena, CA, May 13, 2011 – The latest JOLTS report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that companies advertised around 3.1 million jobs in March 2011.

The JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover) report shows the amount of churn that takes place within the job market every month.

The job openings rose by 99,000 to 3.1 million, which was also the second straight monthly increase. The BLS says that this was the best month in terms of job openings since September 2008. But this was far below the pre-recession record of 4.4 million job openings in December 2007.

But in spite of the 3.1 million advertised jobs, there are still 4.3 jobless Americans for every available job. Economists consider a ratio of 2 to 1 a healthy rate. THE JOLTS report also showed that around 4 million were hired and around 3 million people left their jobs. This includes people who were laid off too. The difference of 200,000 is similar to the net gain of 221,000 jobs reported for March 2011.

Most of the job openings are in retail, healthcare, manufacturing, and construction. Hound, a job search engine, has been able to find over 134,000 jobs directly from employer websites from all over the country.
