Improvements to Healthcare Provision in South-East Asia
Jakarta/Hanoi/Berlin. On 01.01.2007, the Berlin based firm ETLog Health EnviroTech & Logistics GmbH together with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH have started a project to improve healthcare provision in hospitals in South-East Asia. The focus is on hospitals in Indonesia and Vietnam. The rates of infection in hospitals are enormous in both countries. The project is financed by the BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Co-operation and development).According to a report from the news agency Reuters, the German chancellor called for “support for emerging and developing countries with the development of hospital provision” at the AIDS conference in March 2007 in Bremen. This call underlines the acute necessity of the project started in January in Asia.
A large number of infectious diseases such as TB, Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS as well as pandemics such as SARS and bird ‘flu are transmitted in hospitals. The risk for healthcare professionals and patients is high, and this burdens the healthcare system with extra costs. In order to prevent infections in hospitals, preventative antibiotics are often used which itself leads to the development of resistant pathogens. In order to counteract this trend, GTZ and ETLog Health are implementing a public private partnership project in Vietnam and Indonesia from January 2007 – June 2008. The aim is to improve the state of instruments, technologies and know-how to a level necessary to prevent infection with infectious diseases in Indonesian and Vietnamese hospitals. In order to do so, practical guidelines for the secure handling of critical working processes in the healthcare system for Vietnam and Indonesia were developed and adapted to local conditions. In collaboration with public institutions of the healthcare sector, training courses for the application and of preventative measures in different areas were developed, which are of especial relevance for the prevention of infection in hospitals. 160 workers from key positions in around 20 hospitals have already been trained in both countries. They are now able to employ the knowledge gained in their hospitals and spread it further. In addition, local NGO’s and consultancy firms will be made able to offer the training courses independently. Medical students and professors from university clinics will be made aware of the possibilities for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. This will be carried out through their incorporation in the scheme together with ETLog Health GmbH and other local organizations to adapt the AIDS prevention game "Think Negative!®“ to the local culture.
The game is to be presented to the health ministry for recognition as a teaching aid and is to be distributed by local organizations.
