Press release from: Deepstar Marine Pte Ltd

Fully-equipped technical diving vessel in Singapore offers exploration dive trips to the great shipwrecks of the South China Sea.

Singapore, May 8, 2011 – Deepstar Marine Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based company, was founded by diving enthusiast and instructor, Simon Kee, in 1999. His passion for deep sea diving made him pursue greater heights in diving education, in an effort to uphold and impart the great discipline and knowledge of technical diving to all diving enthusiasts. He set up Blue Manta Explorers Pte Ltd back in 1999, a dive school dedicated in promoting and educating divers in technical diving, an activity just introduced into the diving community in Singapore back then. The dive school, recognized in Singapore and the region for its high barrier of entry and strict standards of training, evolved into Deep Submergence Research Group in 2004 and Deepstar Marine Pte Ltd at present.

It has always been Simon’s lifelong dream to be running a technical exploration dive vessel since he started teaching in 1999. In the spring of 2010, his dream came true when he took ownership of the MV Mata Ikan, as he founded the Deep Wrecks Exploration Team with Alan Kelley, a good friend and fellow technical diving professional.

'Mata Ikan' is a Malay word meaning 'Fish Eye'. She is a 23-metre steel utility vessel that was converted into a dive boat in 1999 and further upgraded and refurbished in July 2010. Mata Ikan explores the wonders of the South China Sea with ease and can take up to 15 divers to visit many great wrecks such as HMS Banka, HMS Repulse, HMS Prince of Wales, Luconia, Nippo Maru, Seven Skies and the Dutch Sub K-17 . She is fully-equipped with a gas-blending station, accommodation for divers, a ship galley and even a fully-stocked diving equipment servicing workshop.

The vessel’s dive deck provided accommodation to 12 technical divers or 15 recreational divers. All cylinders onboard are kept current with hydrostatic testing and Oxygen service cleanliness. There are 12 sets of 11-litre twins available and deco cylinders of various sizes for technical divers to have an additional 2 cylinders each. There are over 20 single cylinders for recreational trips.

For further comfort out at sea, Mata Ikan features a comfortable saloon with DVD/iPod player and flat screen TV. Also provided are charging utilities for cameras and other devices. Explorers may choose to take their meals in the cozy saloon or have them taken up on the large airy upper deck.

The vessel’s safety features are backed by years of experience by the team behind Deepstar Marine, making the MV Mata Ikan one of the greatest technical exploration dive vessel in this region.
