Press release from: German Center for Research and Innovation

The German Center for Research and Innovation (GCRI), in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), will host a discussion on “Science for Sustainable Societal Transformations: Towards Effective Governance” on Monday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. at the German Center for Research and Innovation New York (871 United Nations Plaza, First Avenue, btw. 48th & 49th Streets).

Join Profs. Klaus Töpfer and Peter Schlosser as they talk about effective governance for sustainable development. Drawing from the current TransGov research project at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, the discussion will address how top scientific insights can be made accessible and useful for real-world solutions on sustainability and climate change issues.

Under the direction of the former German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Prof. Töpfer, the newly founded IASS, which is located in Potsdam, Germany, aims to contribute to the improvement of governance for sustainable development through investigating and discussing issues such as institutional change and the governance of climate emergencies. The interdisciplinary, multi-sectoral approach has generated exciting contributions to the question of sustainability governance globally. Prof. Töpfer and IASS fellows will present TransGov results from a series of workshops and discussions with international and German experts, ranging from political scientists, environmental specialists, historians, cultural studies experts, anthropologists, economists and philosophers.

Prof. Schlosser’s research is directed towards understanding the Earth’s natural water bodies including oceans, groundwater and continental waters, their perturbation by human activity, and the possibility of designing engineering solutions to environmental issues. He is the Associate Director and Director of Research of the Earth Institute, Columbia University.

The German Center for Research and Innovation provides information and support for the realization of cooperative and collaborative projects between North America and Germany. With the goal of enhancing communication on the critical challenges of the 21st century, the GCRI hosts a wide range of events from lectures and exhibitions to workshops and science dinners. Opened in February 2010, the GCRI was created as a cornerstone of the German government’s initiative to internationalize science and research and is one of five centers worldwide.
