LT Gasetechnik implements ammonia supply for RWE power plant in Hamm
RWE Power AG, Germany’s largest electricity producer, is expanding the Westfalen power plant site by adding two hard coal-fired units D and E with a capacity of 800 megawatts each. To this end, the existing infrastructure of the Westfalen power plant is being upgraded to accommodate the new units. Among other things, this also includes the ammonia storage facility. LT Gasetechnik is responsible both for the process engineering effort and for the execution of the enlargement of the NH3 facility, thereby ensuring that the enhanced requirements of the plant are duly met.The nitrogen oxides (NOx) arising from the combustion of hard coal are reduced downstream in a NOx removal facility, also referred to as DeNOx equipment. Gaseous ammonia is used as a reagent medium for reducing the nitrogen oxides. The purpose of the upgrading is to guarantee the availability of NH3 supply for the DeNOx operation at all times. Moreover, additional redundancies are being created by plant engineering measures. Once upgrading is completed, the enlarged NH3 supply facility will be connected to the new units D and E. "This is a great challenge", says LT Managing Director Alfonso Castell. "Handling with chemical Ammonia requires expert craftsmanship, and an imperatively correct operation. The requirement of permanent absolute tightness pursuant to the German Water Management Act must be consistently met".
LT Gasetechnik is responsible for the complete detail engineering, the selection and procurement of adequate components as well as for the assembly of the system. This includes the renewal of the auxiliary steam and condensate system and the return of rainwater from the wastewater collection tank to the homogenization tank. The electrical and I&C technology is provided by Siemens according to requirements of the planning office Horst Weyer and Partner, Düren.
The NH3 storage facility will be rebuilt and commissioned within six weeks during the outage of unit C. The project is due to be completed by mid-May 2011.
Since its foundation in 1971, LT Gasetechnik has been based in Dortmund. The owner-managed company designs, produces and supplies valves and facilities for Industrial Gases on a global basis. Safety devices, central gas supply, gas mixing technique and plant construction are the four main business lines. The company's philosophy rests on economic efficiency, safety-related standards and forward-looking technologies.
