To obtain lead from ores or minerals is a multi-step process. The first step is to grind the lead ore into small particles that are less than 0.1 mm in size. This makes the ore look like table salt. Following this, the lead powder is passed through floatation process, which involves mixing the lead ore with water. The floatation process also involves adding pine oil and introduction of air bubbles. The agitation of the mixture result in the formation of froth, leaving the lead ore on the surface.

Following this, the froth is skimmed and filtered to remove water. The lead ore powder is then sintered at temperature above 2500°F to oxidize impurities. Thereafter, the resulting powder is heated in a blast furnace, which leaves carbon producing molten lead. The resultant molten lead is poured into lead molds.
