"Chinese Carnival", Chen Zhuo & Huang Keyi

Chen Zhuo and Huang Keyi are two artists from China that find digital photography and video art the perfect marriage of media for their exuberant view of the new China.
They say, “some of our works become more real than reality, while others convert reality into fiction.”
The Chinese Carnival series portrays the country as a frenzied fun park where Chairman Mao gives his blessing to roller-coaster riders. Romantic love merges happily with shopping and the sky is too blue to be true. But there’s a grim subtext to these pictures, seen in the identical faces and robotic poses of the crowds, and in the red balloons that resemble spatters of blood.

Chen Zhuo and Huang Keyi are the winners of the 5th Arte Laguna Prize and as a part of the "Special Prize", were selected by Abnormals Gallery in Berlin to have their works exhibited.

Abnormals Gallery
A window between abnormals.org and the normal world

The idea of the gallery started with the concept to offer artists from the abnormals.org community a space for exhibitions and projects. A place were we could create a meeting spot between abnormals.org artists and the real world. At regular intervals we present solo and group exhibitions, artistic projects, video screenings, readings and musical events. The events have one thing in common, the questions connected with social issues and their exploration. In order to visualize the perspective of the artist on the selected theme, we include them into the curatorial work and are open to their ideas. We see ourselves not just as a regular exhibition space but, more importantly, as a thoughts provoking place for discussion.
First Abnormal Gallery was opened in Berlin in October 2009.
Abnormals Gallery in Poznan is our second gallery in Europe.
Apart from abnormals.org, we work together with the publisher nEgoist.
