Download Festival 2011
The UK's largest rock and metal festival heads back to Donington in June. The Festival Arena will be open from June 10th - 12th, with the campsite opening up from Wednesday June 8th.Now heading into its 9th year, the 2011 Download Festival promises to deliver another truly memorable weekend of music and entertainment.
The Download Festival; owned by Live Nation, is a three day rock music festival which is held in Donington Park, taking place in June.
The Download Festival was a follow up to the ‘Monsters of Rock’ festivals which was previously held at Donington Park between 1980 and 1996. The name Download was chosen for the festival as at the time it was seen as an unscrupulous word caused by file sharing and that of the genre Rock itself as it was a rebellious genre. The organizers of the ‘Download’ festival faced so much grief because some thought that it would destroy the music industry however, the organizers wanted it to be a ‘Monsters of Rock’ for the 21st century as the internet would provide connectivity with its audience.
The first ‘Download’ Festival was held on 31st May and 1st June 2003 with Limp Bizkit and Iron Maiden as the headliners, unfortunately Limp Bizkit pulled out and was replaced by Audioslave.
In 2004 the festival was given a third stage, in total 72 bands played over the two says. Again mishaps happened on the day of the performances however, organizers managed to pull it off by replacing acts. The worst news on the day was Lars Ulrich (Metallica) was rushed to hospital, so the show began with Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo playing on “Battery” and “The Four Horsemen”.
The ‘Download’ festival never ceases to go without having hitches from the very moment they started. Well I guess that’s why it’s called such a controversial name in the music industry.
This year headlining is Def Leppard, System of a Down and Linkin Park with The Darkness, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Alter Bridge, Skunk Anansie, Disturbed, Pendulum, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Korn, Twisted Sister, The Cult, Danzig, Funeral For a Friend and Frank Turner.
Also performing on the day will be All That Remains, Asking Alexandria, Black Stone Cherry, Black Veil Brides, Bowling for Soup, Bring me The Horizon, Buckcherry, Bullet for My Valentine, Cheap Trick, Clutch, Danzig, Devil Wears Prada, Down, Duff McKagan’s Loaded, Escape the Fate, FM, Framing Hanley, Gaslight Anthem, Ghost, Gwar, Hollywood Undead, Hyro Da Hero, Jameson Raid, Kvelertak, Madina Lake, Mr Big, Plain White T’s, Puddle of Mudd, Rise To Remain, Sacred Mother Tongue, Straight Line Stitch, Suicide Silence, The Damned Things, The King Blues, The Pretty Reckless, Thin Lizzy, Times of Grace, Trash Talk, Turisas, Twisted Sister, Versaemerge and Your Demise.
