The San Francisco International Film Society is kicking off its annual film festival April 21st 2011 and Joann Parsont, director of Education at the San Francisco Film Society, will join Dr. Marla Sloane, host of Mind Over Matters, on the Voice America Variety Channel (http://www.worldtalkradio.com/worldtalkradio/vshow.aspx?sid=1868) Thursday, April 7th at 1:00 Pacific Standard Time.

Joann Parsont is the film society’s director of education and has worked in the Bay Area film community for 15 years as a film programmer, writer, editor, consultant, project manager and media educator, specializing in outreach, education, youth media, children’s and documentary programming. She spent eight years directing the Mill Valley Film Festival’s Children’s FilmFest and the Film Society's Schools at the Festival program and curated children’s programs for the Pacific Film Archive and the Boston Museum of Fine Art. She has a bachelor’s degree in Russian and political science from Duke University and a master’s degree in mass communication studies from the University of Michigan. She worked in Washington, D.C. for both the Public Broadcasting Service and the Learning Channel before arriving in the Bay Area in 1994.

Parsont describes the youth education program as a fun and meaningful forum for education and says the program encompasses understanding and awareness. The San Francisco Film Society’s Youth Education program introduces students to the art of filmmaking and celebrates both the differences and the shared values of the many cultural groups that make up the global community. The year-round program aims to develop media literacy, broaden insights into other cultures, enhance foreign language aptitude, develop critical thinking skills and inspire a lifelong appreciation of cinema. Through film screenings, media presentations, interactive discussions, filmmaker visits to schools, study guides and professional development, we strive to cultivate students’ imaginations, facilitate their awareness as filmgoers and empower them as true global citizens. Since 1991, the San Francisco Film Society Youth Education program has reached more than 40,000 Bay Area schoolchildren and 2,500 teachers from more than 250 educational institutions. All programs are designed to meet the Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California public schools, providing vital media resources for teaching artistic perception, creative expression, aesthetic valuing, historical and cultural dimensions of the arts, and the means for connecting and applying what is learned through film to other curricula and careers.
