A Bachelor of Interior Design Degree will be offered by the Academy of Design at RCC Institute of Technology starting October 2011

On March 11, 2011, Hon. John Milloy, the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities in Ontario granted RCC Institute of Technology consent to offer a Bachelor of Interior Design program in the Province of Ontario. RCC Institute of Technology is the only private, non-denominational school to be granted consent to offer Bachelor degrees in Ontario. The program will be delivered through both in-class and online delivery and will be accessible to students internationally.
The Bachelor of Interior Design program, offered through RCC Institute of Technology’s Academy of Design, will immediately begin enrolling for its first class in October 2011. This degree is equivalent to a 4-year honours degree, however the accelerated schedule allows students to graduate after 3 years of consecutive study. The school will also continue to offer an in-class 18-month diploma in Interior Design with the option to continue with the degree track upon completion.

“We are extremely proud of the faculty and staff who worked on this application” said Dr. Rick Davey, President of RCC Institute of Technology. “This is a very meaningful credential and we would not have received consent if we didn’t have an extremely sound and relevant curriculum along with dedicated and qualified educators in our community.”

Rhonda Geraghty, Chair of the Interior Design program, also commented on the Minister’s announcement. “We are very proud of our achievement. This program was designed in response to significant, ongoing changes taking place within our discipline; both nationally and internationally. The new honours degree provides educational frameworks for a diverse workforce of innovative design thinkers equipped with the technical and problem-solving skills to take their place as leaders in the global marketplace.”

Susan Wiggins, the Executive Director of IDC (Interior Designers of Canada) states: “We applaud the Academy of Design administration and faculty for their hard work and diligence in pursuing a degree program. Over the next three to four years, you will see many schools working towards this higher standard of education. The Academy is among the leaders who have taken this very important step to ensure students graduate with appropriate technical knowledge and business skills required to practice in the complex field of interior design.”

The Academy’s Degree program is recognized by the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO) and has a long track record of producing award-winning and successful graduates into the Interior Design profession. This degree would be of interest to individuals who want to obtain a 4-year honours degree in 3 years, or existing 3 year CIDA-accredited diploma graduates (or equivalent) wishing to upgrade to a degree. The schedule for the degree is flexible - there will be multiple pathways to complete the degree
