Press release from: SHEPRETH WILDLIFE PARK

Animal Chemistry

Shepreth Wildlife Park has been working in conjunction with Cambridge Science Festival again this year, putting the fun back into science!

This weekend witnessed the Wildlife Park’s own Discovery Centre bursting with young minds all eager to learn and be inspired by science awareness games and celebrations, with an emphasis on how the wildlife park uses its own science-based technology. Everything from animal breeding programmes, surveys and local & global veterinary involvement were explored, to looking at our own reliance on computers and communication systems. Park visitor, Matthew Gilson, aged 10, was also on hand with three of his own presentations on why we shouldn’t find the natural world so scary!

“The Science Festival inspires us all to investigate and educate ourselves about the natural world. I have recently been talking to students and researching with them the sometimes strange, but interesting subjects as part of this event!” Pete Skinner, Education Officer.

The fun isn’t over yet either. The Education Team has enlisted the help of more budding young entomologists. Scott Parsons and Jess Wright, both 11 years old, will be joining the team along with a few of their own six-legged friends!

“I am so excited to have received so much enthusiasm from children, and particularly how they fuse science and the natural world to make it so interesting to explore. This weekend was a huge success, and we cannot wait to see what our junior entomologists have in store for us next Sunday (27th March).“ Lainie Bazzoni, Head of Education.

The Science Festival also shares the date with the 2011 International year of Chemistry, so the Education Department have taken full advantage of this and plan to highlight the various different facets of animal chemistry throughout the coming months.
