Organizers of “Burns Night” event raised tens of thousands

On the 19th of March the largest charity event in Ukraine - “Burns Night” - took place in Kyiv. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the projects of the charitable organization “Kyiv Lions Club”.

All funds raised during the evening will be invested in the verifiable charity projects of the Kyiv Lions Club. Approximately 370,000 USD was raised, donated and directed to charity projects by the four previous Burns Night events. Since 2002 Kyiv Lions Club has raised and donated over 900,000 USD to worthy causes in Kyiv and the surrounding territories.

Burns Night is a successful and highly respected charity event dedicated to the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns, and has been celebrated in Ukraine for the last 16 years. Ticket sales this year reached the maximum capacity of 500 guests in record time. Guests enjoyed the taste of the traditional Scottish meal Haggis and drank whisky to the tune of traditional bagpipes. According to the dress code guests had to wear a kilt, either of traditional Scottish tartan (check patterns) or of the colour green. DJ Pasha - the irreplaceable voice of Gala Radio - was the host for the evening. The entertainment programme for the event featured Scottish rock-band Irish Celtic Brothers, who artfully combined bass guitar with traditional Scottish pipe tunes, and Tony Henry - the most famous opera star in Great Britain. Guests were also treated to the performance of the Ukrainian pop-band Gortchitza.

Among other projects in 2011 Kyiv Lions Club is hoping to be able to support the reconstruction and re-equipping of the burn centre at Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No2. In 2010 the representatives of the burn centre at the hospital asked Kyiv Lions Club to support the reconstruction and re-equipping of the centre. KLC voted to accede to the request at the following monthly meeting. The first stage of the project began last autumn with KLC organising the refurbishing of operating room No1 and the replacement of the ventilation system. Over the first reconstruction stage Kyiv Lions Club donated 384,000 UAH. In 2011 the Club hopes to raise the remaining finances for the full reconstruction of this hospital department, with a total cost of around 1 million UAH.

“We have been holding Burns Nights for 16 years in row, and each year the event is attracting more and more guests. This year we sold all the tickets 1.5 months prior to the event. We have a lot of regular guests, but also everyone who attends Burns Night once then wants to come back the next year bringing their friends with them. This underlines the success of our work and the fact that Burns Nights is a truly remarkable and unique event. We try every year to make the event more fresh and exciting by inviting new stars and inventing new programme elements” says Stuart McKenzie, “Pulse” marketing agency Managing Director and the main organizer of Burns Night.

“All our activity and all the projects supported by us are only possible thanks to the generosity and kindness of the Club’s supporters including “Pulse” and the other Burns Night partners. Burns Night is one of the four major events of the year, through which charitable donations are collected in order to benefit those in desperate need in Kyiv and Ukraine. I’m glad to see that every year Burns Night attracts more guests as it shows just how many individuals are willing to help those most in need” says Dave Young, president of the Kyiv Lions Club.

Kyiv Lions Club and Burns Night organisers thank partners and sponsors for supporting the event. This year’s Burns Night is supported by: Pulse, Hyatt Regency Kyiv, Jahn Jensen Group, ING Bank, the Famous Grouse, American Medical Centers, KLM, Shooters, Ukrainian International Airlines, Kyiv Duty Free.com, Opera Hotel Kyiv, Intercontinental Kyiv, Coca-Cola, What’s On, Gala Radio, Whites Communication, Impressa Hotel, RSM Apik, Ferrari store, and Cigar Club.

Kyiv Lions Club was registered in 2002. Since then it has expanded to over 80 members who through their expertise and hard work have raised and donated almost $900,000 to worthy causes in Ukraine. Such is the growing reputation of that international companies now view Kyiv Lions Club as a safe means of making charitable donations and of ensuring that their generosity is not diverted. KLC donations have been used to provide essential life support systems for new born babies, equipment for diagnosing cancer in children, teaching equipment for children with Down Syndrome, sporting opportunities for the mentally disabled, shoes and better living conditions for orphans, cataract operations, new glasses, vaccinations and Christmas baskets for the elderly as well as providing construction and decoration materials for homes for the orphaned, sick and elderly. All of this has been made possible through kindness and generosity of Club’s friends. Kyiv Lions Club would like to say thank you to all who gave of their time and money to support its projects.
