Press release from: Blattel Communications

Garvey Schubert Barer is pleased to announce that four highly-regarded tax and business attorneys Gary P. Tober, Ada Ko, Paige Davis and Lisa C. Findlay have joined the firm’s Tax and Benefits Group. Previously with Lane Powell PC, all focus on tax and other legal aspects of cross-border business operations and investment transactions. In addition, two paralegals, Alana Rich and Stacy Guinasso, have also moved to Garvey Schubert Barer with the group.

“We are excited to offer our clients expanded services in the international tax arena. Our firm has always had a strong international focus and one of the pre-eminent tax practices in the Northwest. Gary, Ada, Paige and Lisa add a wealth of experience and skills to these strong practices — particularly in the Canada/U.S. cross-border area. This expansion of our capabilities creates a distinct point of difference for Garvey Schubert Barer, especially during a period when there is a high level of federal tax scrutiny and increasing international business activity,” said Anne Preston, chair of the firm. “The addition of such a talented group of professionals underscores our continued growth and the attractiveness of our firm to high quality laterals – we’ve added 10 attorneys in the past year, and all are strategic, high-caliber lawyers who share our intense commitment to putting clients first.”

Tober, previously chair of Lane Powell’s Tax and Canada practice groups, joins the firm as an owner. With more than 30 years of cross-border tax and business experience, he advises clients from across the globe regarding business investment transactions and operations. In addition, he counsels U.S. and foreign corporations, partnerships and individuals on the tax, business and legal aspects of such transactions.

A frequent author and lecturer on international tax issues and cross-border business transactions, Tober provided testimony on taxation of electronic commerce before the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means. He is an active member of the International Fiscal Association, Inter-Pacific Bar Association, Seattle International Tax Roundtable and Washington Council on International Trade, among others. Tober earned his LL.M. in taxation from Washington University School of Law (1982), his J.D. from the University of Toledo Law School (1976) and his B.A. from Denison University (1973).
Ko, also joining Garvey Schubert Barer as an owner, counsels domestic and international clients on all aspects of corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, financing, joint ventures and other business operations. She has successfully tried tax cases before administrative and judicial tribunals and was formerly tax counsel to the city of Seattle.

Ko is the immediate past-president of the Washington State Bar Association Taxation Section; deputy committee coordinator and past-chair of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association Tax Law Committee; and a member of the International Bar Association Tax Committee, Canadian Tax Foundation and Canada-America Society. Ko earned her LL.M. in taxation from the University of Washington (1999), her J.D. from Seattle University School of Law (1983) and her B.A., cum laude, from the University of Washington (1975).

Davis joins the firm as an owner. Her practice focuses on international tax and business law. She counsels clients in business planning and transactions, including formation, operation, exit strategies, mergers and acquisitions, financing and other business operations. Davis also advises on the tax aspects of aircraft ownership, transactions and financing.

Davis is the President-Elect of the Washington State Bar Association Taxation Section and chair of the Taxation Section’s International Tax Committee. She is an adjunct professor of Canada-U.S. Tax for the Graduate Program in Taxation at the University of Washington School of Law and a pro bono attorney at the University of Washington Entrepreneurial Law Clinic. She is a board member of On the Boards and a member of the Canada-America Society and the Canada Tax Foundation. Davis earned her LL.M. in taxation from the University of Washington (2004), her J.D. from Lewis and Clark Law School (2003) and her B.A. in political science from University of Victoria (1999).

Findlay, joining as an associate, advises clients on the tax aspects of cross-border business operations and investment transactions, as well as counsels clients on the business and legal aspects of such transactions. In addition to Lane Powell, she previously worked at KPMG LLP, where she advised multinational clients on international tax issues including qualified dividend income rate structures, supply chain restructuring, taxation of cross-border cloud computing transactions, use of contract manufacturing structures and creditability of foreign taxes. Findlay earned her LL.M in taxation from the University of Washington School of Law (2008), her J.D., cum laude, from Willamette University College of Law (2006) and her B.A. in environmental policy and her B.S. in environmental science from The Evergreen State College (2001).
