Better chances on the European labour market through further education in environmental protection

03-21-2019 03:28 PM CET | Energy & Environment

Press release from: Umweltbüro für Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.

Climate change, lack of resources, dwindling biodiversity and increasing environmental pollution - these are the global problems of our time. We focus on education at the European level. Together with its cooperation partners in Germany, Poland, Hungary and Romania, the Umweltbüro für Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. (ubb) / Environmental Office for Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. has established a number of new partnerships. The ubb has been working for two and a half years on a European Educational Concept in Environmental, Nature and Climate Protection for Ensuring Cross-Border Sustainable Development (EUBILD-UNAKLIM) as part of an ERASMUS+ project. All participating partners thus contribute to supporting the climate and energy goals of the Europe 2020 Strategy.

Information, education and training are requested for a „greener" economy. The target groups of our project are those affected by unemployment, university graduates and anyone interested in further training in this field, which opens up new perspectives on the labour market, especially in the area of the "green economy". "It does not mean to create new professions, but making the existing ones ´more green`. Therein we see the task of the qualification“, says Ilona Winter, ubb managing director. The project objective was the development of a cross-border further training concept in environmental, nature and climate protection for adults who already have basic skills and thus have the opportunity to acquire additional knowledge in this field.

More flexible on the international labour market

The European approach also enables participants to participate more flexibly in the international labour market and to integrate environmental aspects more closely into the various work processes. "It is quite clear that environmental and climate protection is a complex issue and only works across borders," said Ilona Winter. According to a study by the Bundesumweltamt / Federal Environment Agency (from 2016), more than five percent of all employees were already employed in the "green economy" in 2012.

Within the framework of the project, studies on the current state and needs in the field of "green" further education in the four partner countries were prepared as a requirements for the development of an applied and practice-oriented European further education concept in environmental, nature and climate protection with a curriculum as well as example letters and a solar handbook:

The current climate protection index shows just how urgent it is to promote climate protection. In terms of climate protection, Germany ranks just 27th, which Germanwatch calls "moderate". The situation is even worse for Hungary and Poland, which rank 42nd and 41st respectively - rating: "Bad". Romania, which is ranked 20th, is even better.
