CompostManager - AfOR Award Winner

The revolutionary CMS2010 compost monitoring system, by CompostManager, has won the 2011 Association for Organics Recycling Awards of Innovation in Technology and Machinery.

CMS2010 is a unique total Compost Management System that not only measures and monitors Temperature, Moisture, Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide, but also sets out the criteria for optimising the whole composting process.

By using CMS2010, composters will be able to:
• Reduce operating costs
• Comply with PAS 100 guidelines
• Increase throughput due to reduced production times
• Minimise the impact of odour and bio-aerosols
• Produce a high quality end product.

Thirteen entries were shortlisted across five categories, ranging from a Local Authority Partnership Award to Bio-waste Site Manager Award. The awards recognize achievements in the organics recycling industry, and CompostManager's award focuses on excellence in any aspect of technological and/or machinery innovation in bio-waste treatment and the use of composted products.

CMS2010 is the brain child of eminent soil scientist George Longmuir and analytical chemist Dr Eric Crouch, who has spent four years developing this innovative real time solution. The technology is comprised of a specially engineered monitoring instrument, sample probe and a software package that takes care of processing, storing and interpreting all of the collected data.

The software has been developed following detailed analysis of data collected from over 15,000 sets of measurements, both on isolated windrows and full-scale operational sites. The system will convert data collected from the instrument into meaningful and specific instructions for site operators. Based on the data collected with CompostManager’s unique probe, it is now possible to explain, predict and optimise the behavior of any given batch of compost.

Having only recently been launched, the CSM2010 is already had an array of positive reviews.

Industry Quotes:

“Compost Manager is a real step change in management tools to improve quality outputs from bio-waste sites. Too often the key decision as to when to turn compost is left to chance. Given the significant consequences both in cost terms and in potential environmental consequences of getting the fundamentals wrong, this tool takes the guesswork away and ensures consistent and science based methodology are used to determine the correct time to turn the compost or digestate. I am sure that this tool will play a significant part in improving consistency of outputs from operators who choose to use this equipment”

(Jeremy Jacobs - Managing Director, The Association for Organics Recycling)

“Combining the research supplied by Eric Crouch with our own experience, it was clear that measuring temperature and moisture levels, along with oxygen and CO2, would provide us with useful feedback on how we are managing our composting process. As a result, we are now composting green waste more efficiently, resulting in higher quality and more consistent compost outputs.”

(Ben Dyson, Head of Sales & Marketing for Greenview environmental, the UK’s leading independent processor of organic material)

“Nothing in the last 15 years has made such a difference to improve our
Composting procedures and products.”

(Gavin Bartlett, Head of Composting for Shorts Recycling)

Editor’s notes

CompostManager was founded in 2006 and is the brainchild of award winning soil scientist George Longmuir and analytical chemist Dr Eric Crouch from Soil and Land consultants and Nick Guest, Managing Director at AHS Limited, The UK’s leading supplier of Bark & mulch products to the landscape industry.

The combination of 40 years’ experience in both the soil, bark/landscape industry
and a forward thinking approach to pioneering future solutions to the green waste composting industry culminated in the development and production of CMS2010.

CM2010 is an innovative, real time total composting management solution that monitors temperature, moisture, oxygen and Carbon Dioxide, and then identifies and interprets the optimum levels required. The software has been developed following a detailed analysis of data collected from 15,000 sets of measurements from green waste composting sites within the UK over a four year period (2006 – 2010)
