Walking and hiking in Umbria, walking holiday, Easter 2011 at Villa La Rogaia with guided walking tour

Umbria with its mystisc landscapes is a paradise for wanderers, ramblers and hikers

Umbria with its mystisc landscapes is a paradise for wanderers, ramblers and hikers

Already Saint Francis from Assisi did a lot of walking in Umbria and Tuscany, to visit the newly founded monasteries of the Franciscan friars, the „Frati Minori“ as they called themselves.
During the last years in Umbria many of the historic franciscan trails have been restored, sign-posted, and experience an impressive renaissance.
Every year big groups of Franciscan monks from all over the world walk on them to Assisi, following Saint Francis tracks.
Yet these pilgrim roads, mostly situated in landscapes of breathtaking beauty are a spiritual enrichment for every hiker.
From Villa La Rogaia the Franciscan pilgrimage trails can be reached easily (One of them actually passes in sight of the house.).
Villa La Rogaia also offers to its guests valuable advice for their hiking tours in Umbria.

Walking leisurely between silvery shimmering olive groves, lush green vinyards, cypress alleys and medieval towns creates a very special almost magical atmosphere. Walking up and down from one hill to the next requires some condition (Though along the way there are lots of beautiful places giving an excellent excuse for stopping and taking a break) and good walking boots.
Yet wandering in Umbria primarily is about relaxing and enjoying with open senses Umbrias landscapes rich in history.
Inevitably a traveler in Umbria will and should also enjoy Umbria´s culinary delicacies.
Who wants to (and who doesn´t?) can taste the superb local wine at one of the many wineries or sit down on the soft grass for a picknick with Umbrian culinary specialties. On the menu there are for example wine, ham, truffle salami (Umbria is famous in whole Italy for its excellent sausages and hams), pecorino (sheep cheese), olives and sweet ripe tomatoes which really taste like tomatoes…

Umbria is smaller and more sparsely populated than its famous neighbour region Tuscany. Though it ican easily compare with its big sister, Umbria is still considered an insider tip.
The Umbrian landscape has a lot to offer. Bucolic hills, fields dotted with poppies, olive groves and vinyards. Dense oak forests give way to the precipitious rocks and dark canyons of the Monti Sibillini towering up to a height of over 2000 metres.
Towns like Gubbio, Todi, Orvieto, Assisi, Norcia and of course Perugia are overflowing with ancient cultural monuments, giving testimony of Umbrias age-old history. Pittoresque medieval towns located on hills and mountain crests visible from afar, mostly surrounded by defiant town walls.
They invite wanderers to stroll through labyrinthine alleys and over small squares, leading them back to times long ago…
Now, in spring the landscape is green, with fragrant flowers and trees in blossom, A paradise for hikers.
For guests staying from April 23 to April 30 Villa La Rogaia offers a guided walking tour in Umbria. Apart of this Villa La Rogaia offers an additional little surprise, an Easter basket with local Umbrian food specialties.
