Global MAIR production of The Vagina Monologues plays to SRO

In celebration of V Day, Global MAIR student Anne Fischer produced The Vagina Monologues with Webster University students and women from Bangkok’s international community. The production played to a standing room only audience of nearly 200 people at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand on Monday, February 21.

The Vagina Monologues is a world-renowned play based on Eve Ensler’s interviews with over 200 women. It celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. For fourteen years, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public. Its purpose is to spread awareness of, and stop, violence against women and girls. It is now performed every year all over the world.

The proceeds are donated to non-profit organizations for women and girls. This year, 90 percent of the over 45,000 baht raised at the Bangkok production will be donated to In Search of Sanuk’s scholarship fund. This fund will give young girls from poor communities in Bangkok the opportunity to learn English. The remaining 10 percent will be donated to the V-Day Organization.

In Search of Sanuk (ISOS) is a 100 Friends Project, registered as a 501(c) 3 tax deductible charity organization in the United States. In Thai, sanuk means fun or enjoyment, but ISOS wants to become a powerful mechanism of hope and healing even as it takes a lighthearted approach. ISOS works to alleviate the ills of urban poverty in Bangkok by promoting individual action through volunteering initiatives and sharing quality information on organizations working to build stronger, healthier communities. Webster graduate students join ISOS Saturday educational programs for slum children.

A V-Day Organization movie about rape victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo opened the evening.

Producer/director Anne Fischer graduated cum laude from Webster St. Louis with a B.A. in English Literature and a minor in Women’s Studies. During her time as an undergraduate, Anne was an active member of Students for Gender Equality, where she assumed many lead-ership responsibilities and performed in The Vagina Monologues and A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant, and A Prayer. Anne is extremely interested in the field of human rights. After completing the Global MAIR, Anne intends to volunteer for the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, and eventually pursue her doctorate or a management position in a non-governmental organization.

Anne said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed organizing The Vagina Monologues here in Bangkok. It has been such a great pleasure meeting and working with all the wonderful women who performed with me, and I am really happy that we were able to raise so much money for the young girls who will benefit from it.”

Webster students Lynda Aung, Aditi Pradhan (Thailand) and Mary Ann Feliciano (Global MAIR), joined the international cast, which came from seven countries in the Asia-Pacific region, the Americas, and Europe. Whitney Moore (Global MAIR) and Kaizer Hazarika (Thailand) welcomed guests. Bangkok Center Staff Khun Krisavarna Varamisa, Khun Pooncharat Khamtaeng, and Khun Wannasiri Wannawong, provided excellent support both at the Club and in our Center. Khun Juthamas Sakitjanont and Khun Subas Thapa manned our recruitment table.
