Press release from: Brooklyn, NY

A Brooklyn man was busted after cops stopped him for running a red light in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn on Thursday evening, and found his vehicle was stuffed with approximately 100 pounds of marijuana.

Maksim Kapelnik, 23, was driving a gray 2010 BMW X6 along Emmons Avenue about 8:30 p.m. when he rolled past a red light and made a left hand turn on Shore Parkway, while failing to signal, said police.

A pair of uniformed cops on patrol in an unmarked car spotted the traffic infraction and made a U-turn and tried to stop Kapelnik.

Instead of obeying the cops, the Russian born immigrant gunned his engine and led cops on a chase for several blocks, before finally pulling over close to his residence on Ocean Avenue near Avenue Z, said police.

Maksim Kapelnik jumped out of the car and tried to flee on foot but cops grabbed him as he tried to scale a fence, said police.

Once they had Kapelnik in custody, cops found he had reason to run. The back of the BMW, stripped of its rear seat, was piled high with 4 black canvas bags of marijuana, in total weighing over 100 pounds.

The marijuana was wrapped in clear plastic and then stuffed in black canvas bags, said police.

Kapelnik, who lives in Brooklyn was arrested and faces a slew of charges including drug possession, said police.

Police still have not provided any details on Kapelnik’s prior criminal history at the time of the arrest, but were awaiting a search warrant for the suspects home.

The drugs were taken to the NYPD laboratory for testing. Police are still working to determine where the drugs originated. Information will be updated as the situation progresses.
