Efficient forming of reinforced concrete slabs
Clear increase in productivity with PERI SKYDECK

Sentosa Island, on the south coast of Singapore, has increasingly become an important tourist attraction over the past few years for the south-east Asian city state. The former military basis has been transformed into a sub-tropical picture book landscape – a major undertaking resulting in numerous attractions, beaches and exclusive hotel facilities. Internationally renowned architect, Sir Norman Foster, was commissioned by the Millenia Hotel Group to design a new 6-star hotel complex. 110 generously-sized guest rooms and almost 60 so-called resorts are to be found in the five-storey main building which also has a number of bungalows. The 120,000 m² facility also offers a wide range of sporting and leisure-time activities for the hotel and resort guests.

Due to the short construction period, general contractors, Tiong Seng, decided to take a new direction in the form of innovative formwork systems from PERI. Three SKYDECK formwork sets, each comprising 500 m² formwork, thus ensured efficient construction of all the reinforced concrete slabs. With the SKYDECK drophead system and MULTIPROP slab props, the 35-cm thick floor slabs – with room heights from 3.50 m to 6.50 m – could be cost-effectively formed. Use of the dropheads meant that striking of panels and long beams could be carried out earlier.

Already at the start of formworking, site crews were able to achieve an increase in productivity of around 30% due to the lightweight aluminium individual parts. The systematic assembly sequence and low component weights ensured that work could be effortlessly and quickly carried out with the PERI SKYDECK and MULTIPROP systems.

In addition to the SKYDECK, PERI slab table modules – complete with large forming surfaces which could be moved in one crane lift – and the ST 100 stacking tower as type-tested shoring provided a comprehensive formwork and scaffolding solution. Massive beams in the ballroom area could also be efficiently constructed. The PERI systems selected have opened up new possibilities for the local contractor, and the project´s formwork engineer, Edwin Lee Wee Ping, is sure that the goal of a complete and integrated formwork solution will be achieved. After all, he is convinced that this is the basis for more safety, quality and productivity on the construction site.

The use of the SKYDECK panel slab formwork has also created a lot of interest on the side of the local building authorities and construction companies. During a building site demonstration, close to 200 invited guests had the possibility of observing a direct comparison with conventional formwork methods. It turned out that the SKYDECK was three to five times faster. In addition, the building experts present required little convincing that shuttering and striking with SKYDECK was by far the safest option.
