Manhattan Morning, David Farren

Manhattan Morning, David Farren

The first flush of spring, life begins afresh, the dull, cold winter passes and the desire to travel and see new places is reinvigorated. City Breaks, a new exhibition full of colour and light at the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery, is an inspiration to experience new places or to evoke memories of journeys past.

Cities reflect the immense variety and the immeasurable vibrancy of different cultures and the exhibition, City Breaks, includes the work of several contemporary British artists for whom the city fascinates and stimulates. The exhibition offers distinctive and diverse interpretations of the atmosphere, life and romance of cities – including the capitals of London, Paris and New York and the enchanting European cities of Venice and Bruges. The everyday rhythms, energy, colour, light and movement of city life are explored in a variety of media against a backdrop of lively buildings and urban scenes.

The show features works by contemporary British artists who skillfully bring to life their own observation of the personality of cities. The exhibition is full of contrasts, both in subject matter and painterly execution – the high definition, graphic works of richly coloured scenes by Ian Ledward contrast with the impressionistic, light filled (and often rain-soaked) scenes captured in the fine expressive brushwork of David Farren, Robert Wells and Bruce Yardley; the colour- and light-filled urban scenes of Elaine Fine with the playful paintings of Stephanie Lambourne and the bustling, life-affirming images of city life by Malcolm Teasdale.

Red Rag Modern Art Gallery Manager, Carine Besse said, “Cities have been and remain a rich source of inspiration to artists and we are privileged and delighted to bring together an outstanding and contrasting group of artists for this show – each bringing their unique view of cities to life in a colourful, vivacious and exciting exhibition”.

David Farren was born in Wiltshire in 1972 and studied art at Bristol; Elaine Fine studied at the Hertfordshire College of Art and Design (1981), Camden Institute and Camden Art Centre; Stephanie Lambourne studied at the Hornsey School of Art; Ian Ledward was born in 1946, studied three dimensional design at Leeds College of Art and is a member of the Society of Scottish Artists; Malcolm Teasdale was born in Newcastle in 1944 and was a teacher before taking up painting full time; Robert Wells studied at Batley Art College and London University and is a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Federation of British Artists and a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers; Bruce Yardley was born in 1962, trained as an historian at Bristol and Oxford, has been painting full time since 1996 and is an associate of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

All the artists in the exhibition have exhibited widely and their work is held in public and private collections in the UK and elsewhere.

The City Breaks Exhibition will run from Sunday, 13 March 2011 to Sunday, 27 March 2011 at the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery, 24 Brock Street, Bath BA1 2LN.
