LCPC Drama Puts On Off-Broadway Hit “The Last 5 Years” in February

La Canada Presbyterian Church Drama Ministry is proud to kick of its 2011 dramatic presentations with Tony Award-winner Jason Robert Brown’s hit musical, “The Last 5 Years.” A hit off–Broadway, the musical is about the relationship of a young novelist, Jamie and his wife Cathy, an aspiring actress. During their courtship, the young couple journey from infatuation to dissolution amidst their personal struggles and successes.

“The Last 5 Years” has toured all over the world, including London, Sydney, Mexico, Canada, Greece and Hungary. Of the new young composers working in today's musical theater, Brown is known to not sacrifice melody for contemporary wit, and has the distinction of being called a “pop- Sondheim.” Known for its smart story-telling lyrics, the show captures all the emotional conflicts of sustaining a modern relationship, while highlighting the transforming power of love.

“We are excited to bring this gorgeous musical to the La Canada community,” said Director of Drama Ministries, Justin Fisher. “I love what this show says about relationships and the difficulties many couples face today. It is a great pleasure of mine to provide unique theatre experiences to this community and I am eager for everyone to see this production.”

A relatively new addition, LCPC’s Drama Ministry has been responsible for many dramatic works in the La Canada community over the past year, including “Mark Twain’s Diaries of Adam & Eve” and “The Bible: The Complete Word of God (Abridged).” This ministry also provides a variety of smaller presentations for Sunday morning worship and is currently working with Metamorphosis Theatre Company to provide free improv comedy shows for La Canada high school students.

The musical features a cast of two, Andrew Pratt & Tina Tong. Pratt, the Assistant Director of Worship Arts at LCPC who leads worship every Sunday at its 11:00 am Contemporary Service, is making his theatrical debut. Tong, who sings back-up for Andrew, is a classically trained theatre actress. The musical will highlight their great vocal blend.

The performances will be Friday & Saturday, Feb. 18 & 19 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, Feb 20 at 2:00 pm at La Canada Presbyterian Church, Worship Arts Center, 626 Foothill Blvd., La Canada, CA 91011.

La Cañada Presbyterian Church (LCPC) began in 1948 with 158 members and a vision to reach the world for Jesus Christ. That early church was built quite literally on faith and charity from remainder brick and an operating budget that turned just about all of its revenue into active ministry. Through 65 years of outreach, LCPC grew to 2,000 active attendees doing ministry throughout Southern California and in 40 countries around the
