Improving your golf performance : How core strength helps to improve drive distance and injury prevention

The core of our body is stabilised by a combination of muscles that function together. Knowing what contributes to core stability, together with a general understanding of which muscles make up the deeper layers and how they work together as a whole, can help to optimise game performance and reduce the possibility of injury.

Building a strong core creates connection to the rest of your body, integrating the upper and lower extremities. Proper core muscle function will help to reduce stress from the force and power driven from each swing, countering the effects of asymmetry caused by repetitive movements present in the golf swing. Producing an even transfer of weight and power, for a consistent and safe swing, optimising power and effort.

Which muscles then, are most present and useful when working to increasing dive distance and prevent injury, particularly in the lower back?

Here we look at 3 muscles that can have a direct impact on the effect and outcome of the swing process, along with the protection of the spine.

Internal and External Obliques - bending and twisting/rotation of the spine, builds power in the swing phases, increasing accuracy and distance

Transverse Abdomens - stabilises the pelvis and spine during muscle activation, helps to keep the spine upright in position for proper posture before, during and after the swing phase and functions with the diaphragm when breathing.

Multifidus - stabilises the spine before movements of the arms, takes pressure off the vertebral discs so that our body weight, and the enormous rotational forces generated during the golf swing, can be well distributed along the spine, sets the foundation for the more superficial muscles in the lower back to activate.

In combination with the breath, all conditioning classes that I conduct include movements and yoga poses that challenge the core and integrate proper alignment. Keeping the spine and especially the lower back strong and free from strain.
