»SIT DOWN AND TAKE IT SLOWLY ... IT'S HARD, BUT IT'S HARDER TO IGNORE IT.« (Johnny Cash)
Miron Zownir is an extremist among contemporary artists; and for the last thirty years, he has been one of the most radical photographers. His photographs of western metropolises such as Berlin, London, and New York, or post-communist Eastern Europe have been on exhibit around the world. (...)
From the beginning, Zownir has been involved in addressing socio-critical and taboo-breaking topics in his photographic work. His drastic and grim photographic language delineates the parallel universes of outsiders in a seemingly timeless twilight zone. His work traces and unveils the immediacy of the dark sides of human existence, the gloomy solitude of the social abyss, and the exceptional circumstances of a borderline existence in the human psyche. (...)
Zownir's photography relentlessly discloses a bitter, indigestible reality, deceptively remote from the world seen in high-gloss media. His photographic series about a Spanish flagellant order and pilgrims in Lourdes during the 'holy year' 2000 does not thematically conflict with other social realities in European cities. "Every human being searches for deliverance," says Zownir, "a pilgrim as well as a junkie. The difference is how the individual deals with loneliness and misery."
Text: Nico Anfuso
