CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (January 5, 2011) — The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle (www.thecot.org) announces today that pianist Andrew Tyson will be the featured soloist at its January 16 concert. Tyson is a Durham, N.C. native and a 2005 graduate of the Durham Academy. This is his first performance with The COT.

“Mozart published an arrangement of K. 414 for piano and string quartet, suggesting a concerto of unusual intimacy,” says Tyson. “The chamber nature of this very personal piece makes it ideally suited to the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, and it will be a joy to perform with them.”

The concert, titled From Classical to the Contemporary, will include Tyson as soloist in a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Piano Concerto no. 12 in A major, K. 414. In addition, the orchestra will perform Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony no. 96 in D major – The Miracle” and Robert Ward’s “Symphony no. 3.”

In May, 2010, Tyson, 24, graduated with distinction from the Curtis Institute of Music, receiving both the Festorazzi Award for Piano and the Edward Aldwell Award for Excellence in Musical Studies. In October, 2010, he was a semifinalist in the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland, regarded as the world’s most prestigious piano competition. Tyson has previously studied privately with Dr. Thomas Otten of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently studies at The Julliard School with Robert McDonald.

“It is always a pleasure to be able to showcase with the orchestra a young talent, even more so when this young emerging artist is from the area,” says Lorenzo Muti, COT artistic director and conductor. “I believe our audience on January 16th will be delighted listening to Andrew and witnessing his maturity as a musician and his skills as a performer.”

Tyson’s performance adds to a 2010-2011 season that includes guest performances by clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein, soprano Andrea Edith Moore, violinist Timothy Fain and the Cary Concert Singers. A complete listing of concerts is available at www.thecot.org.

The concert will take place at 3 p.m. at the Carolina Theatre of Durham, 309 West Morgan Street, Durham, N.C. 27701. Tickets may be purchased at the box office or by calling 919.560.3030. To emphasize its commitment to engaging young people with great classical music, the orchestra provides free seating at every concert to students of all ages.
