The Significance of Quality Control at the Design Stage of Spanish Building Projects

The verification of public construction projects is vital in the design phase, particularly when such public buildings include schools, health centers, police stations, public housing, courts, hospitals and prisons.

In order to assure the quality and safety of public buildings at an early design stage, the local government of Catalonia, working through Gestió d'Infraestructures S.A. (GISA) (http://www.gisa.cat/home?lang=en), awarded SGS Industrial Services a contract to review and verify the designs of its public buildings, collaborating with both commissioned architects and GISA.

In January 2011, SGS will begin work on the two year project and will ensure the compliance of the design of public buildings with both local and GISA standards and requirements.

SGS will oversee building projects up until construction begins, carrying out a full Design Verification (http://www.sgs.com/design_verification-5?serviceId=10069410&lobId=5550). With an appropriate scheme, the Design Verification provides confidence that the buildings are designed to the required standards, criteria and legislation with regards to material selection, as well as ensuring that the design and safety levels follow a structured development process. In addition, SGS will verify the design of energy efficient installations, structures, and foundations involved in the design of the Spanish public buildings, as well as assessing the environmental and acoustic impact.
