Kreeft, Ph.D.

Distinguished Christian scholar Peter Kreeft, Ph.D., will speak at 7 p.m., Jan. 13, 2011, in All Saints Chapel at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, 20955 W. Tejas Trail. His talk, "What if Einstein Had Been a Surfer? A Discussion on the Intersection Between Reason, Science and Spirituality,” is the latest in a long-running series at TMI, the Daunt Lectures in Church and Society.

Kreeft is a professor of philosophy at Boston College. He is the author of more than 60 books, including works on C. S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, as well as “Christianity for Modern Pagans” and “Fundamentals of the Faith.” His book, “If Einstein had Been a Surfer” is part of a trilogy, along with “The Sea Within: Waves and the Meaning of All Things” and “I Surf, Therefore I Am: A Philosophy of Surfing.” Some of his writing is available online at www.peterkreeft.com.

His lecture will be followed by a reception in the TMI Refectory. The event is free and open to the public; for directions, visit www.tmi-sa.org or call (210) 698-7171.

Kreeft also will give a talk to TMI students during their daily chapel period, followed by a panel discussion with TMI faculty on spirituality, science and reason. Students will be have the opportunity to ask questions of Kreeft and faculty panelists.

“At TMI, we have a tradition of educating the whole person, including our students’ ethical development,” says the Rev. Nathan Bostian, the school’s chaplain. “Dr. Kreeft’s books find their subjects in the intersection of academics and spirituality, philosophy and science. As a Christian scholar, his work is highly accessible to the general reader.”

The Daunt Lectures began in 2000 at TMI; the name honors the Rev. Canon A. Nelson Daunt, Ph.D., the school’s headmaster from 1976 through 1987. The series features noted speakers from diverse religious backgrounds whose work explores the religious dimensions of contemporary moral social and public issues. Previous speakers have included Maj. Gen. Josiah Bunting III, former superintendent of Virginia Military Institute and novelist, and Ralph C. Wood, University Professor of Theology and Literature at Baylor University.

Daunt, who died in 1992, is honored by the memorial lectures for his vision that led to the establishment of TMI at its present campus.

Kreeft previously appeared at TMI in 2001, as one of the presenters at the C.S. Lewis Summer Conference.

Founded in 1893, TMI is a private, co-educational, college-preparatory school for grades 6-12, with optional Junior ROTC and boarding programs. For information, visit www.tmi-sa.org or call 698-7171.
